so
you know the underside of a box spring frame for a mattress? It’s got that thin cloth that’s stapled in place to hide all its guts, right?
So recently I put the frame back on my bed (because I’m an adult and I should have a bed that’s not just a box spring with a mattress on top and besides, I’m not worried about Fizz hiding from me under it at this point in our relationship) and Fizz (the aforementioned ‘don’t have to worry about her hiding under the bed’ rabbit) has been underneath the bed - yeah. Anyway, underneath the bed diligently chewing on the edge of that thin cloth for the past few days. Rabbit’s chewing on things isn’t exactly new or unusual so I usually just put my hand under there and nudge her away but apparently it Wasn’t Just Random Chewing that was going on the way I THOUGHT it was!
Fizz, it seems, had a plan.
Because today she comes happily bouncing into the room and goes under the bed to check things out, as become her habit, and I, as has become my habit, got down on my knees and looked under the bed and made baby talk at her (because what else does anyone expect me to do?) when sudden
she ascends!
Yeah, so what happened was my clever little baby bear of a rabbit got enough of the cloth pulled away from the side of the frame that she literally just
jumped upward
and disappeared into my box spring.
So the thin cloth is now sagging desperately as this little five pound bunny bounces around on it inside the box spring! And I can only follow where she’s going because of the way there’s now a decided downward dent in the cloth that bounces along as she does. It looks like this
I got my fingers through another sag in the side - these things are just barely stapled there if you’ve ever seen them - and she bounds over to sniff my fingers, very pleased with herself. After a few more moments I ask her if she can get out now that she was clever enough to get in and I watch the downward dent in the cloth hop back over to the other side of the bed and, shortly after, a little fuzzy black head peers down out of the clouds and then the rest of the black body follows. And then she hops over to me for head kisses and praise for being so clever.
Basically what I”m saying is my baby just decided to tunnel her way to freedom under her mother’s nose (or butt really since I’m usually sitting on the bed when she does)
Of course I’m now going to have to find a way to super staple or otherwise reattach things because I don’t want her getting into things I can’t see and I know there are springs, etc up in there (she’s not the first. I once lost a hamster into a different box spring for quite some time a couple years back - Mama Bear also turned out to be fine and had a lovely time).
But yeah, that was my evening.
The culprit. Can’t tell her tail from her nose? I don’t judge.
