Poor thomas
I love how everyone in the first book is meeting in circumstances I’m not used to. Jonas is seeking revenge on Cleo, Cleo almost kills Magnus, Nic of all people is the one to stop her, and for a brief moment in the midst of the final battle, Magnus saves Jonas’ life.
Falling Kingdoms Highlight Reel
Eek it’s the last day of FK week for the IR countdown and I almost forgot to post this. I pulled a couple of my favorite lines and scenes from the book as I was rereading, including both stuff I liked the first time and stuff that struck me differently now that I’m rereading. It’s a little bit like liveblogging but instead of doing it as I went I’m doing it all at once now. I’m planning to do this for all five books, each during their respective week. :)
(Also sorry for the crappy pictures I took them on my phone lol)
Having reread Rebel Springs, it’s hard to understand why I was shipping Jonas and Cleo. In this book, romances are delved into head on without much but the hope for something good. Lucia suddenly claims she’s in love with Alexius, Jonas claims to have fallen for Cleo who he originally hated, and Cleo ends up with an unnamed something for him. You can even argue Ashicolo begins this way, with a kiss in an alley with no real feelings involved.
I think I just disliked Magnus, like Cleo and Nic, because he killed Theon and because he continued to follow his father’s commands. It’s sort of kept with me even as their feelings developed. But rereading, knowing who Magnus becomes and what he’s been through, he’s suddenly made it into my top favorite characters list.
Magnus needs to see the good in himself and to realize that he is not his father nor does he need to be. Cleo needs to see past the black and white she has always believed her world to be. It’s not something either of them can dive into, unlike most the romances that never lasted, but part of both of them evolving.
My blog doesn’t feature too much Magneo discussion because I find the entire fandom revolves around the two of them when there are lots more characters I love. I have issues with aspects of their relationship in Crystal Storm. But I understand them a lot better now.
At the very least, I understand them WAY better than Jonas and Cleo who are a pretty good brotp once they give up on whatever they’re doing in Rebel Springs.
I was rereading and this is officially deadpanned.
WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN ASHUR AND NIC IN CRYSTAL STORM????
“Nic had an incredible imagination and an inviting way about him that set everyone’s mind at ease. Paelsians were not open to visitors from other kingdoms, but they made an exception for the two once Nic got talking. He rarely failed to bring a smile to their weathered faces. Children especially loved Nic, gathering around him at a campfire beneath the stars for more stories that he made up on the spot. Before they left a couple of the villages, a few children followed them, begging Nic to stay just a little while longer so he could continue to entertain them.”
- Morgan Rhodes, Falling Kingdoms, chapter 17
“‘Make no mistake, Prince Magnus, no matter how low you try to push me, I won’t let anything unpleasant happen to Cleo ever again.’
Magnus’s expression remained amused. ‘You entertain me, Cassian. Perhaps I’m glad I didn’t ask for your head.’”
