Selfishness and Betrayal

I have had quite a few days now to ruminate over the new developments of webcomic Chapter 118. Namely, Sonic's short but blunt assessment of his former Ninja Village classmate...

We know Sonic has a grudge against Flash, established sometime between their friendship in the village, and Flash's decision to slaughter everyone there and abandon his former companion. But I think this chapter gives us the first glimpse as to not only why Sonic doesn't just hate heroes, but Flash specifically.

We recall just a few chapters earlier when we were introduced to Sonic's apparently heroic ideals. He described eagerly to Flash his ideas for remaking the Ninja Village and giving more freedom to ninja students, other than the current murderous dogma. Interestingly, we got little response from Flash in this scene.

Flash appears to have had his own notion of good and evil, though, because he truly believed that the village was beyond repair and that any of the reform Sonic talked about was futile. He took matters into his own hands and the rest, as they say, is history.

I think a large portion of Sonic's grudge - and describing of Flash as "selfish" - can be found from this background info, and another scene in Chapter 118, when Sonic confronts Flash about the culling of the village.

2 things stand out to me here:

1) Sonic's "You didn't even discuss it with me". Not "You didn't discuss it" but "You didn't EVEN discuss it with me". He sounds hurt, and if Sonic had expected Flash to discuss it with him, then that tells me they were still on speaking terms right up till the very end. This would make it particularly hurtful for Sonic to have someone he considered a friend totally ignore him and go against what Sonic must have thought was a common goal.

2) Flash was not confident Sonic would share his ideas and morals.

And back to the "selfish" comment...based on Sonic's less violent (than Flash's) plans for the village, and Flash's silence on the whole matter until he did what he did, I think Sonic's grudge against Flash (and belief that he is selfish) stems from Flash having appeared to believe in Sonic's morals and ideas, only to throw them to the wind and do his own thing - destroying any chance of Sonic rebuilding the village as he saw fit. Flash chose to act on what he believed was "right", which differed strongly from what Sonic believed was "right". He acted on his own, and did not ask Sonic for help, feedback, or opinion.

If I were Sonic, I'd feel betrayed and hurt by Flash's decision - which he made entirely on his own, it appears. Sonic had plans that seemed far more heroic than Flash's - keep the village standing, but change the regime it stood for. Flash saw it differently - destroy it all, as it was beyond hope.

I think a large part of Sonic's resentment for Flash as a hero stems from this, as well. Sonic sees Flash as nothing more than an assassin claiming to be a hero; that his title is unfitting. Sonic, while being an assassin by profession, appears to operate under more heroic ideals than Flash does (at least, to Sonic's eyes). It is a very interesting contrast, which certainly makes Sonic's character perhaps more sympathetic and his resentment for heroes more understandable, even without Blast and Saitama being added to the equation.
