"Why do you bother?" Teekl asked with a slight head tilt as she looked to Klarion, who was gazing at Wally and Dick from a distance.

"It's good to want things," the Chaos Lord defended, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them back up.

"Even things you can't have?"

As he watched the two happily chat, barely able to pick up on the conversation, Klarion couldn't help but feel himself smile softly at the speedster and boy wonder, and he felt his face grow a bit warm.

"Especially things I can't have..."

Finding out Barry and Zee were almost a thing from your blog and I have to know...How did Zee go from a polite quiet guy who cooks and does cardio to John? Downgrade 😭

Retcons, man. retcons. They wreck havoc.

Back then John didn't even exist as a character. Barry Allen and her manager Jeff Sloan were her love interests. I think the only sleazy thing about the latter was him occasionally referring to Zee as 'kid' but otherwise was a goofball / dude in distress 90% of the time.

When John debuted they retconned in the idea that he and Zatanna dated in the past when they attended tantric classes together. So I guess you can read the Barry romance as her having moved on from liking the bad boys to liking the more sweet and mild mannered guys.

I agree that making John her main is a huge downgrade.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of favoritism skewered towards John from fans and writers alike. They started this notion that Zatanna had a weakness for bad boys, John specifically, and that no matter how often John lies or lets her down, she can't quit him, then they started downgrading her competency and knowledge just to keep her tied to him. Even infantilize her by turning her from a former classmate to his student. These ideas grew and spread like a bad fungus and got us where we are today.

Even though it never became a full blown relationship (more of a situationship as my friend @zatanna-maximoff called it), I like how the Barry/Zee moments snuch their way into group shots:

Well, this was an unexpected surprise. FlashZee moment in the upcoming Harley Quinn Valentines Day episode:

Hell, they seemed to have ripped the panel directly from the comic that first teased it (Justice League of America #187) and just made it move across the screen:

I’m not expecting her to have a speaking role but this is a nice shout out regardless.

So.... a few posts back, I said I wasn’t a fan of Mike Friedrich’s two comics starring Zatanna and skipped over them.  

But lets take a look at one of them which was also Zee’s first meeting with Barry Allen in Flash Vol 1 #198. The comic was written by Mike Friedrich with art by Don Heck.   

As is common for Zee, it starts with a show gone wrong:   

Although this is the first time in publication we see Zatanna and Barry together, the two already know each other and Zee even knows Barry’s secret identity.   

 (Also the first hint that she is attracted to him.) 

Side note: I haven’t seen anyone ink Zatanna’s fishnets the way they are done here. No outline for the legs, just inking the fishnets around the leg.  

Zee is transported to a magical world where she takes on a being called Xarkon who has possessed the magician Namba. The latter summoned Zatanna to help him.    

Barry, who is left behind on the stage, find his own way into that dimension:

   He arrives to help Zee but is helpless against magic until Zee figures out how to free Namba:  

That is a very passionate and well drawn kiss. You think Zee ever hops back into Namba’s dimension from time to time for some sexy times?   

Zee and Barry return to their dimension where Zee finally gets to complete her trick with some assistance from Barry.
