Short Review: Flat Ed - Clapped Out (2013)

Flat Ed - Clapped Out Ben Morgan

Flat Ed is a singer/songwriter from the UK and his debut album is littered with influence from British bands throughout the pantheon of pop music. Ed’s sonic template is familiar, calling to mind the intricate production of Radiohead but influenced more by 60s pop than paranoia or anxiety. His ten song debut trips through all of this with a talented focus that is sometimes undercut by his large ambition.

Tracks like “Sister School” succeed by calling to mind specific artists, in this case a Hunky Dory-era Bowie, while building on Ed’s modern production aesthetic and strong, malleable voice. At other points in the album, like in the fiery opener “24 Hours” Ed taps a Beatles/Kinks vibe that showcases a knowledge of pop structure. These influences bleed in and out of the album around Ed’s own unique sound, but they could do with being a bit more contained. “Upstairs to Bed” veers to sharply outside of the album’s comfort zone with industrial sounds that call to mind too many 90s alt-rock bands. “Scapegoat” is well produced but reaches for social commentary too blatantly.

As a debut Clapped Out succeeds in generating interest in a new talent, but fails to lay out a succinct list of strengths. Ed would do better to focus on his psychedelic rock than already trying to marry other genres into his style. For a mixed bag, though, there’s more prizes than not rustling around inside.
