On January 31, 2025, a Learjet 55 medical transport crashed in northeast Philadelphia after take off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, killing a pediatric patient, 2 doctors, 2 pilots, and a family member.
This tragic incident occurred just 2 days after, an American Airlines jet collided with a military helicopter near Washington, D.C. where 67 individuals lost their lives on January 29, 2025.
And 24 years after the deadliest US air disaster on November 12, 2001, when an Airbus A300-600 operated by American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor, Queens, New York shortly after takeoff from JFK Airport. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 251 passengers and 9 crew members onboard, as well as 5 individuals on the ground.
On this day in 2001...American Airlines flight 587 crash lands in Rockaway, New York #history #disaster #planecrash #americanairlines #flight587 #rockawaynewyork
Yesterday, 17 years ago, Flight 587, en route to the Dominican Republic, crashed at Belle Harbor, Queens (out there by Far Rockaway), minutes after taking off from JFK. That day 265 souls lost their lives.
American Airlines Flight 587 was a regularly scheduled international passenger flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic. On 12 November 2001, the Airbus A300B4-605R crashed shortly after takeoff into the Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens, a borough of New York City. All 260 people aboard the plane (251 passengers and nine crew members) were killed, along with five people on the ground.
Because the crash occurred just two months and one day after the 11 September attacks in New York, several major buildings including the Empire State Building and the United Nations Headquarters were evacuated. In the months after the crash, rumors circulated that the plane had been destroyed in a terrorist plot. Those rumors still persist to this day.
The hardest blow was to the city's large community of immigrants from the Dominican Republic. The majority of the passengers were Dominican. In some city neighborhoods, like Manhattan's Washington Heights, it seemed like everyone knew someone aboard the flight.
May the 265 souls lost that day rest in peace. May the Lord grant peace, comfort and understanding to the families and friends left behind.
