this is so ridiculous? the notion of a "closed species" seems so rude idk maybe im not understanding it all the way but....... why

yeah i think its mostly a concept that originated in the deviantart adoptables community, popular adoptable artists would make original species with very specific attributes and variations, get ppl interested, and then ‘close’ the species so they can sell them.

in some cases i think it’s alright, bc theyre like highly detailed, original, fleshed out creations, not the kind of thing that anyone is just gonna randomly come up with the exact same concept. so it’s understandable to keep the design ‘closed’ and sell them.  but in practice that’s incredibly rare, it usually ends up being... really generic concepts being called ‘closed species’ (i.e “sushi dogs”, which sell for up to 1000 fucking dollars each for ‘holiday specials’), and it’s fucking ridiculous.
