Greetings, today's #gameoftheday goes to Star Wars: Starfighter on the PS2. Released in 2001 the game is a flight combat action game set in the Star Wars universe and takes place before and during the events of Episode 1 and leads up to the Battle of Naboo. You play as 4 different characters all of whom come from very different backgrounds as you then join forices and fight in the Battle for Naboo. The one main character you primarily play is is Rhys Dallow, a fighter pilot for the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps. You're primary vehicle is the infamous Naboo Starfighter. This game is actually pretty good and the graphics still hold up even after 15 years since it's release. I'm told the Xbox version of this game looks even better with sharper textures and various other enhancements overall. I really enojy this game quite a bit. It's not quite good as the Rogue Squadron series and some of us older Star Wars fans might be put off by it's prequel era setting, but it's still a good game despite those nitpicks. The controls are quite fluid, the level design is great and the story is actually quite enthralling. I like Star Wars games that take place parallel to the main saga, (which is why I like Rogue One so much). Like I said, I'm told the Xbox version is better looking than this PS2 version, but I think it still holds up. I would love to see what this game looks like on a beefier console. Now I do have the game's sequel Jedi Starfighter on the Xbox and if the first game looks anywhere near what the sequel looks like, I'm down! Good afternoon, today's #gameoftheday goes to one I just picked up yesterday and played it all night, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. The game is an arcade style flight combat game taking place in an alternate-history 1930s; where due to the United States breaking up into sovereign nations who are at constant war with each other, the Interstate Highway System and the Transcontinental Railroad never came to existence. Instead planes and zeppelins have become the preferred method of travel. You play as Nathan Zachary, a hot shot ace pilot who's part of the Fortune Hunters, a gang of sky pirates. Nathan flies along side his fellow Fortune Hunters fighting off against the Hollywood Militia, which is the the Air Force wing of the State of Hollywood. The game is an action flight game that puts more emphasis on arcade action over straight simulation. The physics are more relaxed, the controls are simple to learn, and take-offs and landings are automated cut scenes. The game also has an open ended mission structure. I've only been playing this for a day since I just bought this game yesterday, and I must say I've been missing out! It's a well made game. Flight combat games are a genre that seems to always be left in the dust over shooters and open world action adventure titles. I also really enjoy the setting as I'm a sucker for the pulp comic book style of the 1930s and 1940s, it stems from me growing up with The Rocketeer. Unfortunately like The Rocketeer and Sky Captain, sales for the game was small and went by relatively unnoticed. Hello everyone, today's #gameoftheday goes to Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. I'm still fairly new to the Ace Combat series as well as flight action games in general as its a genre that hasn't really become as popular as first person shooters or RPGs, so I missed out on these games and others like Birds of Steel and Blazing Angels. Ace Combat games have predominately taken place in fictional countries and locations and you fight for or against fictional governments and factions. This is the first game (that I'm aware of) that takes place in real world locations. Sure the story is of course fictional, and seeing as this game was released in 2011, the setting takes place in the then-future of 2016 where you fight in a war against a rebel Faction in East Africa. The game controls great and the different planes actually do have their differences in handling, maneuvering and speed. The controls have two distinct settings, one that helps keep your plane level, and one that gives the player total flight controls. It also features a really cool dogfight mode where if you're close enough to an enemy plane, the camera shifts to an over-shoulder type camera that auto follows the plane and you control the aiming reticle.
