Greetings, today's #gameoftheday goes to Extreme-G 2, aka XG-2 for the Nintendo 64. Released in 1998 it is the second entry in the Extreme G series where you drive futuristic vehicles bikes (which kinda resemble Light Cycles from Tron) in an intergalactic Grand Prix driving at top speeds of 1000 miles per hour. Each of the vehicles have their own characteristics in handling, speed, armor and traction. One major element of the Extreme G series is weapons. Yep, it's a futuristic Mario Kart where you have a certain arsenal of weapons at your disposal to takedown your enemies to gain first place. When piloting each vehicle you have to keep an eye on two different energy meters in the heads up display, one meter for your armor and the other for your weapon's energy. If your armor is depleted you will crash and burn upon contact of any opponents or if you crash on the track costing you either a life or the race entirely. One awesome thing about this series is that it runs a smooth 60fps which was mostly unheard of back then. Upon release this game was criticized for the fluctuating framerate and slowdown compared to the first, which ran a smooth 60fps non-stop. Me personally playing this I haven't encountered it too much and if so I don't notice. It's a super fun racing series that I believe needs a resurgence. Futuristic racing games were all the rage back in the late 90s but I've been noticing a sudden uptick popularity of these arcade style fast paced racing games. So an HD remaster or a re-release would be perfect for modern audiences. It'd make a great budget title for digital downloads on PSN and XBLA. Greetings, today's #gameoftheday goes to Metal Gear Solid 2, the long awaited sequel to what is probably my favorite games for the original PlayStstion. This particular expansion was released a couple years later that features more content, bonus add-ons, etc.. the story focuses on Solid Snake who must infiltrate a military ship disguised as an oil tanker that's housing a new kind of Metal Gear, but the tanker is sabotaged and oil is spilled offshore of Manhattan. Two years later, an oil cleanup complex known as Big Shell has been seized by terrorists and they have taken hostages including the President of the United States. For the remainder of the game you play as a new character codenamed Raiden, who works for the Foxhound unit lead by Col. Campbell. When it came out the game was met with critical acclaim, and for good reason. The graphics are outstanding for a game made over 15 years ago! The attention to detail the series is known for is in full force here and it has that Hideo Kojima touch. Most gamers were lukewarm to Raiden, especially when you play as Snake for the first portion. Greetings, I don't often cover PC games so today's #gameoftheday goes to Yoot Tower the spiritual successor to SimTower, both of which were designed by Yoot Saito. The gameplay has largely remained unchanged from SimTower, in that it's a building management simulator and the goal is to construct a unique and profitable building with a variety of amenities and living accommodations, all the while balancing the needs of the occupants who inhabit it. As I said the game plays nearly identical to its predecessor, it adds several new features and gameplay options in the type of tenants at your disposal and also in the building aesthetics. One new building feature that caught my attention is the ability to erect two separate structures on the same lot and you can connect them via Sky Bridges. Also new to this game is you can now choose the location of your building. You are provided three different locations each with their own set parameters such as how tall the buildings can be, what you can place inside and how much money you're allotted at the start of the game, the variations therefore gives each location its own difficulty level compared to the others. Lastly, Yoot Tower adds the ability to expand the game using downloadable plug-ins (90s DLC) which add even more locations and different amenities thus increasing the game's longevity. Unfortunately it was available in Japan only as US sales were too low. I love this game, because I loved SimTower growing up and this game is better with more things to do, and new locations to vary up the gameplay. Greetings today's #gameoftheday goes to Wave Race 64 for the Nintendo 64. Released in 1996, it was one of the N64's first generation titles meaning that while it wasn't a launch title, it was released soon after and was out in time for the console's first Christmas shopping season '96. The game is an arcade style jet ski racer where the object is to slalom through a series of buoys all the while trying to gain first place. There is also a stunt-mode where the object is to gets as many points as possible by passing through rings and also pulling off insane stunts off of ramps placed along the race course. Some tricks are easier to pull off than others. You can do flips, rolls, handstands, and even some elaborate stunts. I still really enjoy this game, and it's one of the few games that I have nostalgic ties to that I can still clearly recall as if it were yesterday, which is why it freaks me the fuck out that it was 20 years ago!! The graphics are still impressive, and yes like most N64 games, it hasn't aged too well, but the water physics still impress me to this day. It feels like actual water and the waves actually play a part in the jet ski's handling. I also enjoy the soundtrack, it has a soothing smooth jazz feel, and even though I like it, its still nothing to write home about and it's not exactly memorable. You won't find this game's music on any Best game music lists. If you have an N64 you should pick this up, its a really common game and still relatively cheap these days. Or if you don't have an N64, its on the Wii U Virtual Console and I'm sure it'll make its way onto the Switch's Virtual Console as soon as it launches. Greetings, today's #gameoftheday is an updated review on a game I covered last August, No Man's Sky. I bought this game on launch and when I reviewed it originally, I was probably one of the few people who liked it on launch while everyone else was hating on it. Now those who were hating on it are totally within their rights, the game we got wasn't the game they promised. But despite that I still liked it. I wasn't reading up on the latest news prior to launch and I wasn't really following its development too closely so my expectations weren't high. For my original review check my post from last August. Since the game launched there have been two major game updates to the game, both of which add a wealth of new features and content which practically changes the game entirely. The first update came in mid-November with the "Foundation Update" tweaking gameplay and addressing several issues, mainly on the terrible UI and inventory management. Most notably it added base building, creative and Survival modes; and lastly this update added purchasable freighters and awesome space battles. The second update which was added last week known as the Pathfinder update added even more features, new base building assets and new ground vehicles like land rovers and all terrain vehicles. These additions changed the game rather drastically and it finally gave players something to do in this vast galaxy. I admire Sean Murray and those at Hello Games for trying to make the game they sought out to make and try to redeem themselves for what was delivered last August. Is it too little too late? Greetings, today's #gameoftheday isn't much of a game but a wonderful and memorable accessory, Super Game Boy. Released on the Super Nintendo in 1994, it's a special adapter that allows you to play Game Boy games on your TV! While it may seem common and not at all mind blowing these days, back in the 90s it was an awesome concept. The cartridge itself isn't an emulator device of any kind, the only way Nintendo could make it work was that the guts of a Super Game Boy has all the guts and components of a standard Game Boy, just without a screen or any button inputs. Simply insert a classic Game Boy game into the front slot and insert the Super Game Boy into the SNES like you would any other game and voila! What also sold us kids into getting this thing was that you could play your Game Boy games in color!! Little did we know that they didn't mean full color. But instead you're able to customize and do some simple palette swaps and you're able to choose a border on your screen since the actual game screen doesn't entirely stretch the screen. Certain Game Boy games that were released after this came with additional functions that made use of the Super Game Boy's additional processing power like more color palettes, specialized borders. Nintendo would later use this adapter idea for the Nintendo GameCube with the Game Boy Advance player. Interconnectivity and intercompatibility has always appealed to Nintendo and why they've tended to favor that over online multiplayer in the past. If you don't have a functioning Game Boy or want to play Super mario Land on the big screen, pick yourself up a copy of the Super Game Boy, they're relatively cheap these days. . #gameoftheday #supergameboy #gameboyadapter #supernintendo . Greetings, today's #gameoftheday goes to Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for the PlayStation 2. Released in 2004, it is the second entry in the Underground spin off series and sixth overall entry in the Tony Hawk franchise. The gameplay to this game is similar to all of the games prior; that is you skate around in an open 3D environment modeled after various cities and locations and complete various goals by stringing together numerous tricks and combos to achieve the highest score. Unique to the Underground games is the addition of a story mode and its focus on customization. You make your own skater and can customize the appearance, stats and skill set of your skater, then which you go a on a "World Destruction Tour" with famous Pro Skaters. This game added a Classic Mode, which allows the players to skate through new and classic levels with the traditional 10-goal/2 minute timed mode present since the very first game. I really enjoy this one, it's actually my favorite of the entire Tony Hawk franchise. The skating physics and level design are spot on, with plenty of rams, rails and halfpipes to suit all your needs and with the same control setup we've come to know over the years. The soundtrack is freaking awesome too! That's another reason it's my favorite, the song selection is awesome and you can make a custom playlist by removing the songs you don't want. On top the usual punk rock and hip-hop tunes, it includes a few classics you wouldn't expect to appear in a contemporary skateboarding game, as Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash are featured in the soundtrack.
