22. trying to play footsie with the other during a meeting

Josh’s head is slowly sinking further into his hand, propped up by his elbow. They’re at another insufferably long and boring label meeting about the new album. He’s nearly nodding off, eyes glazed over, hardly listening to their manager, when something nudges his foot.

Josh lifts his head, looking first to Max next to him, then Dan across the table. Dan’s looking at their manager but he has an unmistakable smirk on his face. Josh narrows his eyes and kicks back, his toe tapping Dan’s boot. Dan’s face splits into a wider grin, still not looking at Josh as he swings his boot into Josh’s. Josh cracks a smile and lays his shoe on top of Dan’s, pushing down on it.

Dan finally looks up and squints at Josh as he yanks his foot out from under Josh’s, feeling around for Josh’s shoe when he moves it away. He finally catches it under the toe of his boot and Josh giggles, pulling it back. Dan frowns at him and loudly stomps his foot on the floor.

“Are you two alright?” their manager asks. Josh blushes furiously, grinning.

“He started it,” Dan says.

“Shut up,” Josh says, kicking him in the shin.

“Ow,” Dan says.

“Have you finished?” Max asks, elbowing Josh in the ribs.

“Fine,” Josh says. “As long as he quits playing footsie with me.”
