Spring is here! River monitoring is in full swing

Arch Environmental Group staff have been working with school districts to conduct river monitoring in their watersheds. South Lyon Community Schools, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, and Mount Morris Consolidated Schools have been getting hands on with science doing chemical, physical, and biological monitoring in the Rouge River & Flint River Watersheds.

The chemical monitoring consists of testing the water for pH, nitrates, phosphates, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, and coliform bacteria. The physical monitoring consists of measuring the velocity, erosion and structure of the water. While the biological monitoring consists of collecting macro invertebrates with nets, identifying them, and determining their abundance. Students wrote down their findings and were eager to get their hands dirty! 

Hoben Elementary School also had an opportunity to learn about stormwater by attending an Arch Environmental Group led stormwater presentation. Students learned what should and should not go down a storm drain and the benefits of doing their part to help the environment!
