Flip Flappers Review
I started Flip Flappers more than halfway through this season, I think even closer to 10 episodes being completed at the time after only viewing its first episode upon release. At the time of that release, I was no where interested in this anime. Though it spewed pretty colors and cute girls, It didn’t hook me enough to keep me watching with the plethura of other shows I had on my handle this season. By episode 10 I had heard some good things and I gave it the watch I should have in the beginning, and holy cow was I missing out all season. Flip Flappers not only got better after that one episode but it grabbed hold of me and took me on an adventure I never would of suspected from just that bland and confusing first episode. If any show would get an award for most growth between it’s 13 episode this season, it would be Flip Flappers.Flip Flappers is slightly like a homage to FLCL in its designs and colors and it reminds me a lot of the styles of art I saw in Gurren Lagann. Though not exactly the same, you can still make out bits and pieces of this shows design that makes up how beautiful these characters are and the world they inhabit.
The story takes place between a young girl Cocona who is alone at the beginning of this show, she is a normal girl to her suspicions and has but one friend she talks to every now and then. On that first episode, she meets Papika, another young and excitable girl who would be considered a magical girl to the person viewing. Papika and Cocona’s paths cross as one would call “faith” but is actually way more than that. Those two together hold the power to enter the world of pure illusion, an alternate dimension holding a place only your wildest dreams could think of. That is where most of their adventure takes place and where most of the episodes end up coming to. Now pure illusion might seem like the most grand of a place after viewing episode one, but more people besides them can enter this world and they’re after taking control and using the power of pure illusions world. And Papika and Cocona along with others they meet have to somehow fight these enemies together the only way they can. But ii’ll leave that to you to figure out how.
Pure illusion provides and infinite bounds world in which anything can happen. A lot of the series and things that happen in the series are unorthodox but it really fits the theme of the show. The first episode it is confusing because you really don’t know what this world holds for its viewer and what it’s made to be. Halfway through, you know exactly how to portray the world of illusion and the unorthodox style becomes really appealing to the design the show is made of.
There is a big theme of love between the two girls and there might be an underlying story of a girl coming to terms with loving someone of the same gender behind all this. At some point we may refuse it but in the end we’ll learn to embrace the love we have for the people that love us and won’t let anything stand in the way of it. Over the course of 13 that theme of love and bonds between these two characters is highlighted above all else. Papika and Cocona are lovable and as the story progresses they get better and stronger. The backstory behind these two is something i’m thankfully didn’t get washed off to the side or forgotten about. We have full detail and disclosure to their AMAZING backstories to the point where it almost seems like you have been following these two around your entire lives.
The sound, voice actors and music in general are all astounding. The OP, and ED have to be some of my favorites this season without a doubt in my mind.
The only downfall of this show is its slow and perplexing start. Like I stated, the first few episodes leave you in a sort of limbo of not knowing what this show could be about and its understandable many viewers dropped off. Not much happened besides setting up very small and particular story devices for the later episodes until episode 4. But once the ball gets rolling it is a steep hill to fall because Flip Flappers just got better and better with each passing episode. And usually at just half way through the season it’s very difficult to keep that kind of momentum but Flip Flappers seemed to fulfill it effortlessly.
I highly indulge you to watch Flip Flappers if you passed it up this season and stick with it for the long run. Its colors and designs appealed to me the more I watched the show and became eye candy by the final credits. The characters will be those you fall in love with as you watch them fall in love with each other and without a shred of doubt this is the show I enjoyed the most this season despite watching it so late in the game. My personal pick of the roster of shows with only 12-13 episodes this season that you absolutely have to at least checkout to see if it’s for you. Flip Flapping.

Favorite Character: Cocona
Flip Flappers
Dont you just love how sweet and innocent Papika’s and Cocona’s relationship is. They have so much love and compassion for one another, it warms my heart to see how they grow together, and balance each other’s weaknesses with their own strengths.
