this is how I hold writing utensils, and pen nibs work well for me- my best guess is that this hold is easier to make horizontal for the prongs to separate?

dis makes sense.. funnily enough holding a writing utensil like this makes my thumb hurt and even though my regular way makes that one tendon (?) in the wrist Activate, this way makes it like. i can tell it would get painfully tense if i wrote in this way for too long
