Pilot Ted Herbert goes for a spin over midtown Manhattan in February 1937. He is operating a new type of sport plane dubbed a "flivver" by The New York Times. It houses a V-8 automobile engine. This latest invention was supposed to solve New York's traffic problems, since the engine "could be taken from a Ford and installed in the plane when the owner decides to quit the road and take to the air." Mr. Herbert reportedly flew out of Roosevelt Field. The Empire State Building, then only six years old, can be seen below.

Flivver and LindaFromHR?

Flivver's workshop is right across from Linda's office, which is unfortunate for her (or anyone who likes to leave their window open without the risk of coal smog billowing inside.) She's knocked on Flivver's door to complain on more than one occasion, but he's usually too preoccupied with making sure his prototypes aren't escaping out the back.

Linda knows the system well enough to file the right paperwork to have Flivver's business moved, but sadly, no one really cares to enforce zoning laws in a space where the ground contracts and expands in random directions several feet per day. The best she can do for now is point her box fan in the other direction.
