Approaching the island of Miyajima via ferry from Hiroshima.  The world famous floating torii is in the middle of the photo.

The floating torii as seen from the shore of Miyajima.  The torii has been undergoing renovation since June 2019, and is currently covered with scaffolding.  This is part of a larger renovation project on the Itsukushima Shrine  complex, of which the torii is part of.

At low tide one can walk out to the floating torii.  One day I’ll be good enough with Photoshop to erase those two gaijin.

The Itsukushima Shrine complex on Miyajima Island (which is formally named Itsukushima).

The entire complex is built over the water, and appears to float during high tide.

Parts of the complex, as well as the famous floating torii (seen in the last photo) are under renovation, which is scheduled to last through the end of 2022.

The day I visited everyone around the shrine was busily preparing for a local festival that night.  Unfortunately, I had to catch a train to Kyoto later in the afternoon and missed the festival.
