they’re back home at this point , tired & bruised & both looking like they could sleep at this point . they were told to stay behind , to essentially play defense & make sure everything where they are in the states is safe . ( translation : as useful as they both are, they’re still s e v e n t e e n & maybe it is better if they stay behind , just in case . )

but they’re successful in staying home : people are safe , are going to be okay because of them . now , they’re just waiting for the update that its all over , that the fight was over , that the good guys won .

but that’s not the call they get . it’s not the victory call . it’s a panicked call asking what’s going on over there , because they didn’t win . they failed . they lost , vision died , they still had members like IRON MAN missing , & thanos snapped his fingers & vanished , & its complete chaos in wakanda now . THEY LOST.

blue eyes , full of panic & suprise , meet max , & as he stands completely still , waiting for everything to come crumbling down , literally & figuratively , it’s a shaky voice that laces the words that tumble out of his mouth . “ what does -------- w --- what does this mean ? max ? ” / @flockleads

he breathes in slowly , turning his head and cracking his eyes open . ❝ hmm … ❞ for a moment , he can’t remember what he’d just been doing : can’t remember that he should have been finishing this story instead of falling asleep at the edge of max’s little bed . and then he does remember , and it wakes him up a little more . not enough that he actually moves . just enough so that he can look up at max , eyes half-shut , and stare at her blankly for all of two seconds . ❝ no . ❞ it’s a wonder he’s even gotten that out , with just how sleepy he is . with a sigh , he forces himself to sit up , plucking the picture book off his chest . ❝ s’cause it’s time for bed , little guppy . ❞

BUT SHE MUST BE SUSPICIOUS she sounds suspicious . and he cannot entire blame her , for all the untruths he has told her . ❝ does it ? ❞ a soft grunt , a look back down at the raw meat he weighs in his hand . letting out a breath , he leans over , grabbing the stick at his side and spearing it through before hoisting it up to heat over the fire . HE HAS TO ADMIT , she is perceptive . but he will not be giving up his rewards simply because of a moment of question . ❝ why do you think i would keep anything from you ? i have nothing to lie about . ❞
