not currently, I was actually wondering if I could ask your opinion on the program. I've been planning on taking that program but I've come across a lot of negative reviews for the school online and I thought I should ask a current student what they thought of it. you can answer this privately if you want
Okay, This is pretty damn important because you are right. The school DOES have a bad rep, so i’ll do my best to explain personally. Maybe clear some things up.
This applies Specifically to the Halifax campus. This may not apply to the other campuses.
Firstly, Yes. The school has Negative reviews. This is because the school used to refuse to either reject or fail any students. This led to a lot of students never finding jobs or doing well, this reputation has kept new students (including me at one point) hesitant about enrolling. Something that our former head teacher Greg, gets irritated about to this day.
Greg, a graduated Sheridan student, much later became the head teacher and fought for the right to fail and not accept students he believed shouldn’t pass or be accepted. He succeeded. After all, it’s common sense right? So thank him. All the praise, because now the school is a far better place and he deserves it.
But basically, the bad reviews are a result of the “No fail” and “100% acceptance” policy they once had. And maybe bad teachers. I dunno. However, this certainly no longer applies to the school. At least not the 3D department.
Greg is retired now. Our teachers are Matt Lambert for 3D modeling/zbrush(who is now head teacher), Simon West for texturing/modeling, Dylan Edwards who replaced Greg for animation, and Adam Gunn for Life drawing classes. Ron Doucet, the author of “FloobyNooby" is still a teacher, but he is off doing Teen titan GO(i think) so he might not be back for awhile. I haven’t seen him since my second term(He’s a cool dude though).
All of the teachers are professionals. They uphold professional jobs on the side, and know what they are doing, and do it well. So here’s some bio’s of the teachers(I totally apologize if I describe them wrong. holy hell on a biscuit please spare me my entire class reads my blog);
——————————————————————————-
-Matt Lambert- is one of the best Zbrushers/3D modelers in miles of this area(Probably other area’s too). Or so I’ve heard. I can certainly believe it. Hes REALLY good at what he does. After all, he and the other teachers quite literally taught me everything I know. He has a beard and he is never seen not wearing a hat.
We question if he ever not wears a hat. But this is a topic for another time.
His Hobbies include Hats, Nerf guns and scaring the crud out of us students in hallways. Fun fact; He also has a dog with a doggy wheelchair.
-Simon West- is a comic book artist and texture artist. His developed method for rigging models is now DHX media’s standard. So he knows his stuff. His features include glasses and really long white/blonde hair. Hair that would kick Rapunzel out of her story and turn Aphrodite into a mere mortal upon looking at it.
- Dylan Edwards- Is one of our newest teachers. He is our enthusiastic teacher of animation. He enjoys movies and videos/memes/pictures about cats. He’s been developing a show pitch for awhile now about a Supreme Overlord(i’m not sure how much I should say) and really loves the movie Pacific Rim. Especially the storyboarding done on the beach where the suit crashes and the camera goes from the two guys and slides to the guy who comes out and collapses. Incredible.
-Adam Gunn- Is our life drawing teacher. He’s really good at it. he gets TONNES of practice by teaching each class after all. It puts any skill I have to shame. His hobbies include biking and indie Music.
-Ron Doucet- He has a website;
—————————————————————————————-
The course is an 2 years long(and intensive) and all of our classes are three hours long, and the term last 3 months. After each term, we receive a two week break. We don’t break for summer.
The classes are really REALLY good. Ignore the reviews the school has- at least for Halifax Campus. The teachers know what they are doing, and are willing to help you out. Many people have graduated and found really REALLY good jobs. Many of our students work at DHX media(They make up the entire rigging department), and some have even gone onto working in feature films.
One guy worked on the recent Godzilla film.
But let me level with you here. Your success depends solely on how much work you put into it yourself. You gotta be willing to sacrifice almost(if not all) your time and devote it to your work. And I for one- am guilty of going on tumblr too much. Hell. Look at me now doing the thing.
I went into this program with like zero knowledge on how to do anything but drawing on like an intermediate level. Maybe not even. I had no skill sets. No knowledge. I went in blind as a bat.
To be honest, I don’t know if i would have made it this far without my teachers or my class. I made it into a really good class and as a result, it’s easy to find help when i’m lost or feeling defeated on anything(which is almost always).
Center for arts and Technology Halifax has;
-Well constructed courses? As far as I have experienced, Yes. And it’s being improved all the time.
-Good Awesome Instructors? Would I have bothered to write all that stuff up there if they didn’t know what they were doing? The answer is yes. They are questionably even too good to be teaching at this school. I and many others probably wouldn’t be where we are without them. I don’t think they receive enough thanks or credit.
It’s surprisingly hard to find a school with teachers that are all industry professionals. So if that’s what you (and yes you DO need it) need than yeah. You are in luck.
- Job opportunities? There’s a bunch of notable places in Nova Scotia. The teachers are extremely supportive in helping you find a job and they stay up to date with potential jobs in the area and let everyone know when to apply. They are industry professionals. They give you a really good advantage in finding a job. Important.
Nerf guns? Yes. It’s a fact that DHX media actually has a Nerf gun assigned to each of their employees. All the departments have a flag, and apparently when the time is decided an alarm will go off and they will jump up and destroy each-other in a capture the flag brawl to the death(no one dies though, That was a joke).
And No, i’m not kidding. Nerf guns are very important.
-Should I go to Center For And technology Halifax? Yes. You won’t regret it. At least I don’t.
-Questionable Reviews? Shut up and transfer here already.
-But maybe the Revie—- No.Stop.
-Ok. You got me. But can someone like me even be successful? I’m about the dumbest person on the planet. And by using much less sarcasm I mean that I learn at a slower pace than others, and that can often make things frustrating. If I can do it, you can do it. So yeah.
I do not know if the other campuses are any good. I recommend you invest coming to Halifax.
i dunno what else to say. So there you have it. 10/10 will recommend. Don’t listen to reviews. Have a nice day. This has been Merleawe reporting and i’m very sleepy, goOD BYE.
