Current WIP: making myself a very very queer rainbow blanket!🌈🥰
I am obsessed.
I am knitting all of the time.
I am giving myself carpal tunnel.
I do not care.
I must knit myself a soft cosy rainbow.
This pretty much started when I saw this yarn:
I HAD TO MAKE SOMETHNG WITH IT!😍🌈
And after my Mt. Everest of knitting that was the King Salmon sweater (will post about that saga soon😅). I was convinced that I could complete a blanket, which meant that I could order TWO of these glorious cakes of happiness.
It has‘t even been a full month, and I am already 25% done…
I was 100% convinced that last year I would become better at sharing my knitting….
And then I completely forgot to do so. On the bright side, I have now all sorts of finished projects to share💜
TA DAAAAA
Pattern: King Salmon Light sweater by Boylandknitworks
Possibly my best knitting so far. I am so SO proud of myself for finishing this. This is also the most I have ever UNDERESTIMATED a knitting project in my entire life😶.
Except a few baby hats, I had never knitted a garment for anyone else. Seemed like that would be a fun thing to do. So why not start with my partner? Who has a hard time finding clothes that fit well? Who is build like a modern day viking? (Not joking, he has literally been an extra in a terrible viking movie)
I am NOT build like a viking (I wish), my brother got those genes. I am reasonably tall for Dutch standards, so I kinda forget that my own sweaters are not the most representative for how long it would take one to knit an adult-sized garment in general…
I also forgot that while I am tall, my height is about 80% legs. I am more or less shaped like a baby giraffe, all limbs no body😅. So my full length sweaters, would be very cropped on anyone else.
So last year October, I thought to myself, "Wouldn‘t it be nice to give my partner a sweater for Christmas? I can knit a sweater in a month, I have almost two months to do this, that should be plenty of time for a somewhat larger size“.
Famous last words.
One should not apply sewing logic to knitting.
Turns out that if one needs to make a garment that is pretty much two times as wide AND two times as long… it takes you four times as long…
I actually have a degree in mathematics, this is very embarassing
One the bright side, the yoke could double as a blanket while knitting😁.
During this whole endeavor friends would occasionally joke about the sweater curse. It is a funny superstition, and I have told some of my not-deeply-into-fiberarts-friends about it. Joke was on me though…
At 90% mark disaster struck. I still don‘t know how it happened. Part of me wants to blame our cat, but the tiny terrorist (we love her lots, but she‘s a menace) was on the other side of the room.
Somehow the shelf next to me collapsed and it‘s contents -including a lit candle- fell on top of me and my precious knitting… 😭
I was inconsolable for the entire evening. Kudos to my roommates for understanding the gravity of the situation and being wonderfully supportive (AKA letting me ugly cry all over them). My partner assured me over the phone that he would still wear it even with a 15cm candlewax stain.
Called my best friend who immediately went into research mode. Tried rinsing as much of the wax out while it hadn‘t fully dried and consoled myself with stardew valley and sauvignon blanc.
The next nine days I spend pretty much all my energy carefully warming the wax between paper towels and blotting with alcohol. My roommates got me me an XL package of paper towels (and a new bottle of wine).
EVENTUALLY I GOT ALL THE WAX OUT
This was my magnum opus of stain removal.
So I clearly did not get this finished in time for Christmas. At that point I had just finished the yoke, but he proudky showed that to all his relatives, which was incredibly sweet.
I did manage to get it done before his birthday in february!
He is extremely happy with it. Was definitely worth the effort.
and I have learned not to joke about the sweater curse
Finally blocked this beauty! Love knitting Westknits shawls. The patterns are very clear and easy to follow and they‘re filled with fun techniques😁🧡.
Almost happy that I‘m sick. Even though its hot, I still get to wear my pretty new shawl.
This is their GoGoDynamo shawl, it was last years MKAL. The construction was really interesting, instead of starting at the center, the pattern had you start halfway. Made it a super fun journey and seeing the whole thing come together was incredibly satisfying.
