2016 Music in Review: Top Five Floorfillers
Now, before we start, your definition of floorfillers might be a little bit different to mine so don’t get your knickers in a twist. These are the, in my opinion, the best tracks/remixes the DJs of 2016 have been dropping this year, perfect for any playlist, and the tunes I’ve been Shazamming on the dancefloor this year
Alan Fitzpatrick – We Do What We Want
At the end of Summer 2016, not one song was close to this one. Fitzpatrick has consistently been releasing quality techno singles for around 2 years now but this one is definitely the jewel in the crown. He is quickly becoming one of the best producers in the game with the composition of this track being simple enough to catch everyone’s ear but not falling into, what I call, the ‘moody’ category of some techno artists. One of the top traits of this record is that it is so radio friendly, ensuring people carried on listening once festival season was out the way. Respected by the purists and loved by the part-timers, win win.
Robyn – Indestructible (The Black Madonna Remix)
The Black Madonna was the queen of 2016, so when I had a little look through her collection, to see what all the fuss was about, I was buzzing to find this track that I had been looking for for some time. Resident Advisor’s DJ of the year, she sprung to everyone’s attention in 2012, becoming Smart Bar’s, the US’ oldest house music venue, new resident DJ and creative director. A big advocate of politics through music, she broadcasted her ideology all over the venue and later the whole of the techno scene, impressing everyone with her attention to detail in every aspect of her performance. I, unfortunately, am still yet to see her play but this remix of a 2010 EDM track by Robyn and Laidback Luke shows how she can mould almost anything into her genre of choice. Might be a bit repetitive for some, but had to throw one scatty tech tune in there.
Lapsley – Operator (DJ Koze’s Edit)
Lapsley has had a massive year, taking the hearts of thousands with her calming tones and trippy melodies, so I really didn’t know what to expect when I heard she had a track out that was getting people moving all over the gaff. It turns out that DJ Koze was the perfect person to take her work to the dancefloor, a remix extraordinaire, blending together different genres to compose complex but happy formations. Despite all the layers in this track, Lapsley’s voice still takes centre stage, tying together all the other nooks and crannies into an easy listening disco track perfect for the end of the night.
Prince – I Wanna Be Your Lover (Dimitri from Paris Re-Edit)
Prince’s first hit single, from 1979, was already an absolute rammer in my eyes but with Dimitri adding that little bit extra to it, it is now orgasmic. Not much at all has changed from the original, showing its timeless value, but just enough for it to fit into any future funk maestro’s record collection. It can turn up anywhere in a set but, in my experience, it is the perfect sweetener to bring everyone back up if shits getting a bit heavy. Looking forward to seeing what else Dimitri has to offer in the new year.
Edwin Starr – War (TWOGOOD Remix)
Now these two lads have been making some serious waves in the past year. Touring all around the festivals, they have pulled off some of my favourite sets ever and, each one, just seems to get better. This remix is the perfect example of what they do, changing an instantly recognisable tune into something new and fresh, but keeping the funky old school vibe everyone loves. Their shameless use of sound effects, spin backs and over the top scratching adds to the fun factor in every one of their remixes, but at the end of the day it is a quality produced tune that would set any room up for a good night. TWOGOOD are one to watch for 2017.
Apart from this wonderful top 5 I would also recommend Jamie Jones’ remix of Come Together, Saison’s Do You and Freak Like Me which was put together by Lee Walker and DJ Deeon for all your playlist needs. Happy listening people
