WhimsiKarren’s Games of the Year
In no particular order.
Let’s get Elden Ring out of the way. It’s not my favourite of the fromsoft games as the top spot there for me is Sekiro, but it is at the very least tied with bloodborne for being my favourite of the more proper souls games. There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said about it.
Lets you marry another lady as a lady. Perfect game.
Tunic
If I were more inclined to make a list, this one might be number one. Tunic is a game that hits me, specifically, the way games like La Mulana and Ittle Dew 2 do. It's got fun exploring and combat but the real meat, the real fun, is the elaborate world spanning puzzles and secrets. These games feel few and far between and I eat them up everytime I find one. Ah...
An aside, is outer wilds a secret explory puzzle game? I keep hearing about it and have yet to try it... Might do that soon.
Also. Not sure it's all that gay. Not really enough characters for that though. Somehow my favourite game despite lack of gay. Impressive.
Last Hero of Nostalgaia
this one came out of left field at the end of the year thanks to a friend. This souls-like game quite effectively nails the demons's souls/dark souls 1 feel and might be one of the better souls games not by from ive played. It's got a bit of a 4th wall breaking stanley parable aspect to it that's neat and has a sort of puzzle mechanic with gear where you can unlock effects by bringing the gear to a scenic location hinted at in its item description. Pretty neat all around! I haven't finished it yet but I'm close and even if it nosedives I'd recommend it for how much I've gotten out of it already.
not all that gay but there's a couple cool ladies.
Splatoon 3
Not as good as octo expansion, but a damn fine expansion to the game. Story mode had a bunch of cool and fun levels that make me look forward to its dlc where I can get my favourite videogame couple back. Played the hell out of its multiplayer in September and fell off as always, but I enjoy the time I spent with it. Feels good to control, is a blast to play, high recommend if you wanna jump and shoot.
once pearl and marina come back it will return to being canonically gay. almost perfect game.
Floppy Knights
A cute little strategy game with a deckbuilder element mixed in. It's not the most addictive turn based grid strategy game I've ever played and I did get bored towards the end and haven't finished it, but Im certain I'll go back and complete it eventually. For the first 3/4ths of the game I'd say it was well worth playing. And you get the delicious art from the artist behind Dicey Dungeons! It's beautiful and cute!
There's a rivaly between two girls. Maybe gay? Unknown...
Signalis
Oh damn this horror game! Not yet done this one either (man im slow at games; not enough time to finish everything!) but this is amazing! The art style is incredible and while the limmited inventory is a bit ridiculous I am in love with the aesthetics. Could do without the screams on the enemies tho. Definately the best horror game i've played in long time.
also seems pretty gay from where I got. Pretty good game.

Check out Floppy Knights on steam if you haven’t already!
Indie Game Spotlight: Floppy Knights
Time to clean out your storage and take out those old floppy discs! In this week’s Indie Game Spotlight, we’re talking Floppy Knights, which offers a fresh take on two familiar genres. It combines tactics and deckbuilding, all wrapped up in a colorful fantasy-meets-80s-tech aesthetic!
We had the pleasure of speaking with Marlowe Dobbe, the creative director of Floppy Knights, about all things relating to inspiration, characters, and good gameplay. Read on!
What were some inspirations for the game?
Floppy Knights pulls a lot of inspiration from games we’re big fans of. It’s a new sort of mash-up between deck-building games like Dominion and tactical games like Advance Wars. I’d say a lot of the color palette and the overall visual saturation and brightness come from Advance Wars as well.
The game’s concept originally came from a game jam two years ago. What has the journey been like since then?
This is the longest I’ve ever sat on an idea that I’ve liked this much. It was really interesting having it on the back burner and kind of thinking about the characters and world just in my own headspace. When we finally had the opportunity to start working on the game, I already felt very familiar with the world and knew how to flesh it out. Bringing it to the team is what really got it from a rough concept to an actually viable game—particularly working with Christian on nailing down that really addictive gameplay. I wanted to evoke the same good-brain feelings I get from all my favorite tactics games!
Who are some of the characters we can expect to meet?
The main protagonist is called Phoebe. She’s a very smart but very lazy engineer who’s decked out her robotic arm, Carlton, to read floppy discs and turn them into tangible projections called “Floppy Knights.” With the help of these Floppy Knights, she’s taking on odd jobs around town to try and make a quick buck.
In addition to Phoebe, Carlton, and all the Floppy Knights we’ll meet, there’s a whole cast of characters that will cross paths with her as she gains more and more notoriety for her invention!
Did you design any characters that didn’t make it into the game?
Plenty! I’ve done a lot of concept art around what characters would look like in the world of the game. I designed way more Floppy Knights than we’ll ever need, and the jury’s still out on how many of those will actually make an appearance. We did a lot of work on the balance of the decks themselves and realized each deck should have roughly 5-7 different Floppy Knights—instead of the 10-15 I had initially designed. Cuts had to be made, but our favorite designs have made it so far, and the game’s way better for it.
Well, what are you waiting for? Time to boot up those discs! You can wishlist Floppy Knights right now on Steam, and stay tuned for their release in 2020!
Floppy Knights
It's pretty darn good
Deck builder
Tactical turn-based combat
(Not a roguelike)
Mechanics all work pretty nicely
Very cute aesthetic and characters. Story is goofy but serviceable.
Difficulty curve/learning curve stay nicely in sync with one another and aren't too steep
Controls are pretty clunky on the Switch port, ngl. Dunno about other platforms but I imagine it's a lot nicer to play with a mouse than it is with a joystick.
Sound design and music are very enjoyable. They really nailed those two aspects!
Doesn't overstay its welcome while also providing a good number of optional challenges and puzzles if you really want to sink your teeth into the experience.
Four floppy knights outta five!

I finished the main game of Floppy Knights, which is a cute little strategy game where you build decks of units and actions and use those cards to make your units move and attack.
(Screenshots from the Steam page, because I can't be bothered messing around with my Switch to try and transfer stuff)
I had fun overall. The art style is cute (same artist as the game Dicey Dungeons, one of my faves) and while some levels were challenging it wasn't too bad overall.
UNTIL! Until the second-last chapter, when suddenly things got super-difficult. I don't know if I was playing wrong or what but it felt like things went from "challenging but manageable" to "this actually feels near-impossible". Maybe I could have eventually beaten them without help, but constant failure isn't fun for me!
I'm very glad the game includes accessibility options (on the main menu, you can't do it while in-game for some reason), because I had to switch ALL of those options on to actually finish the game.
Anyway. Fun game on the whole, cute little story, but if you decide to give it a go I recommend using the accessibility options once you hit the second-last chapter.
