It's July 5th 🧬
on multiple occasions i have seen people on socials excited for palworld 1.0 and it has taken me a moment to realize they aren't doing a bit and are genuinely excited
Do you know nothing about capitalism. This is coming from an avid anti-estabishment. More competition is good for us. This is a marathon, not a fucking sprint. Read a book.
hi! thank you for commenting. i know more than you. the point of this post is that Palworld is not competition.
see, here's the thing: it is absolutely possible to create a monster capturing game that could compete with Pokemon. It wouldn't win, it wouldn't even come close, the sheer market dominance of Nintendo and The Pokemon Company is too overpowering for any competitor to have a reasonable chance of doing that.
The problem is that nobody is going to do that because every attempt to do so is an attempt to compete with the superficial elements of what Pokemon is now, rather than following the how and why that led to Pokemon to become what it is. The objective they are chasing is how to compete with Pokemon, which is no objective at all. The only way to create a true competitor is to build the equivalent to Pokemon again from first principles.
There are plenty of other good monster catching games (as people have mentioned in the notes) and if anything we could do with more of them - it's an underexplored genre IMO. But Palworld isn't that. Palworld is Pokemon as imagined by a modern gamer who believes Pokemon should have completely altered its gameplay style to match modern trends. It's the sandbox gameplay loop soup idea of what Pokemon should be. It's slop. It's the gaming equivalent of a protest vote.
You know that "every bat fits on this chart" meme post?
I'd like to humbly put this forward.
It seems like all Pokemon are basically creatures, guys, or things.
Here the people will decide which are which.
Polls are posted in Pokedex order, with the exception of any requests
Request Rules:
1. Check to see if it has already been requested. If you search the name of the Pokemon on this blog, it should appear if it has already been requested. If you want, you can also check the results document linked below
2. No Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, or Unova requests. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh have been completed and Unova is currently underway for pokedex-order polls
3. Only one request per ask. You are allowed to request as many pokemon as you like, but send them in seperate asks
4. If you request any non-standard poll (which would include requesting things that are not pokemon, or having options besides "creature, guy, thing") then that poll will be saved and posted on April 1st EDIT: Now that April 1st 2026 has passed, requests like this will either be saved for the end of all normal posting, or April 1st 2027, whichever comes first
5. Variants of Pokemon (mega, regional, etc) are allowed for requests as long as they have a different shape/design from the original Pokemon. (So shiny and dynamax Pokemon are not valid, for example)

I asked this about Vaporeon a while back, now I'm back at it again:
What texture do you think Lugia is?
Feathers, like a duck
Smooth skin, like a dolphin
Rough skin, like a shark
Short fur, like a seal
Mix of the above (in tags)
Other??? (in tags)

Any personal dislike of a design I may have is dwarfed by the fact that Jynx exists and really should just be retired as a design.

Help Professor Birch rejected my Tomodachi Life self insert's romantic advances. Absolutely devastated.
I mean I did create 5 men whose sole purpose is to fall for my self insert, Professor Birch included. Although Gordie did already get married to one of the other potential partners. So that brings us down to 2.

Drawing a connection on the conspiracy board in my head between the game corner, Poké balls being literal gachapon capsules, and that one weird novelization of gen I that was never translated where it's implied that the Kanto economy runs almost entirely on sports betting
If Poké balls are gachapon capsules then would a European equivalent of Pokémon have the creatures hatch from chocolate surprise eggs??? Much to think about.
The American Pokémon equivalent would be obtained as the equivalent of happy meal toys. You go to the tavern or whatever in this fantasy world and receive a free monster with your meal
I also want to add that Amerimon is straightforwardly a western RPG set in either a fantasy or postapocalyptic world.
Euromon is set in a specific historical year in a specific real town and has the energy of a euro board game. You spend 10% of your time in battles that resolve based on monster tokens on a grid and cards with buffs you collected, and 90% of your time is resource management to keep your monsters fed. There is wheat.

Offhandedly mentioned Pokeballs being plastic in a different posts and people were objecting to it, so now I'm curious:
What are (standard, modern) Pokeballs made of in the games?
Plastic
Lightweight Metal (like aluminum)
Heavyweight metal (like steel)
Plastic outside with metal plating inside
Some secret other option (in comments)

Things to consider:
Pokeballs are generally shown to be incredibly light weight
They do not seem to dent
Pokemon that are hit by them seem more annoyed than hurt
They float on water in the games and modern anime
They cost about 200 Pokedollars (yen) which is about $1 USD give or take
They are durable enough to not crack (though they can be broken clean open at the hinges by Pokemon)
