We collected another mystery today.
Further in the woodsy hills we found these tall conical trees with tops that also appear to be getting ready to bloom, so we call them Flower Towers. When we got close we found another food chain going on: the bottoms of the leaves were home to a bunch of fat black caterpillars (Accordion Crabs) with highlighter-bright pink pompoms on their backs. They are the cutest and most obviously deadly bug I have ever seen, and I feel the name Poison Puff captures them perfectly. Kibwana caught a couple in a jar so he can see what kind of butterflies they become.
We sort of collectively remember learning in school that poisonous caterpillars get their toxins from their food, so we did take leaves from the flower tower to analyze but we weren't going to get our hopes up. Sure enough, the mass spectrometer later showed that they were full of toxic alkaloids. Boonmee has high hopes that they might be medicinal.
Despite having a literal neon sign advertising that they are made of Death, the poison puffs were food for some small grey-green birds. The birds would peck the caterpillars off the leaves so they fell on the ground, and then flutter down, find them, and flip them on their backs to scoop the insides out. They would leave the exoskeleton with the colourful bits, and most of the back half, which I assume is where the poisons were concentrated. Since Reynolds is the bird nerd we gave him the honor of naming them and he decided that the lumpy stuff around their beaks and eyes meant they were pigeons, and called them Pistachio Doves because they're the same colour as his favourite ice cream.
Clever as these little guys were, at least one got more than was good for him, because we found a dove that was walking in circles on the ground and kept falling over. We considered trying to help but didn't know what we could do for him, so we left him and moved on.
The Flower Towers don't have leaves on the lower branches. They only start about four metres up. A couple of the broccotrees were also missing the lower layers of foliage... and a possible culprit had left a calling card in the form of a Jurassic Park sized shit. The ground was too hard to take footprints, so we have no idea what this was besides Large Herbivore. It can't have been here more than a couple of days ago. Dung beetles were hard at work and the pile probably won't last long. We decided to head back before it got dark.

One of my favourite renovated Plattenbauten, called the Flower Tower - Allee der Kosmonauten 145, Berlin-Marzahn
It’s a DDR building run by the local Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft that offers social housing for low-income tenants. It’s decorated with pictures of landscapes from all over the world, with infos about these regions, such as the Amazon rainforest or Central American deserts. Further infos are available via the QR codes on the info signs.
Marzahn/Hellersdorf is considered one of the worst and poorest residential areas in Berlin. However, the people living in this block are very happy with how it turned out. Not just because it looks very beautiful, but also because the renovation made it more eco-friendly and halved the heating costs for each apartment.
The building is proof that Plattenbauten are and have always been more than just soulless grey concrete blocks. They are human homes and should be treated with dignity.
