Floral Designer, Finn, has always had an eye for quality since he was a wee British lad. Freesia, hyacinth, buddleia - essentially anything from an English garden tickles his fancy. He carefully inspects every flower delivery and is known to swap out flowers last minute when they aren’t “just right”. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2cpREWHQp6/?igshid=j9m975gpd8mu
“Alright,” Dick says, closing the door and leaning against it. “I'm listening.”
Jason's mouth goes dry. All of a sudden, this seems like a colossal waste of time. Dick doesn't – shouldn't – want to marry him, for Christ's sake, he's not entirely sure why Dick even likes him, even keeps letting him in his bed. If it's just a companionship thing, Dick could literally have anyone, he doesn't have to be tied down for life with a headcase for a husband and a kid to boot.
He swallows. “Well.”
Dick raises an eyebrow. He's looking up at Jason, but Jason feels small under his gaze, a kid in pixie boots he could never quite fill.
“Fuck.” He takes a step back, shakes his head. “Forget it – I don't know what I was thinking, honestly, dumb fucking idea – ”
“Seriously, Jay?” Dick's shoulders slump. He takes a deep breath. “So, what, you're leaving again?”
Jason stares. No, he wants to say. Never. What he does say is, “That was a dick move, bouncing and sticking you with Dani like that.”
Dick makes a face like he's just been slapped. He walks to the window and crosses his arms, not looking at Jason. “I can't keep up with you,” he says, after a moment. “Last night, I didn't even know if I was gonna see you again. This morning, you asked me to marry you, and now you're acting like you're gonna disappear again. 'Sticking me with Dani'? Do you even hear yourself?” He runs a hand through his hair, twisting it at the ends. Jason's fingers flex at his side.
“That's the hardest part of this, for me,” Dick continues, still not looking at him. “Is that you could grab her and just leave, just vanish in the middle of the night and take her with you, and there'd be nothing I could do about it.”
“She's not your responsibility,” Jason says automatically. “I wouldn't – ”
“She is,” Dick insists. “She's all of ours, Jason. She's family. She's yours, and you're ours too. That's the way it works around here. I mean, it'd be one thing if you thought I was like, unfit to be a parent, or something – ”
“Dick,” Jason interjects, snapping his head up. “No, no way. I'm fucking unfit, I'm not built for this shit.” He laughs dully. “Probably be better if I left her with you. For her, I mean.”
“Jason.”
“Look, I was just – I was just thinking, I guess, and it's probably really stupid, but since we've been sleeping together or whatever, and it seems like a good idea, for legal reasons, I guess, and Dani's pretty attached to you. I'm not the biggest fan of paperwork, but I feel like it might be good for her to have something, in case something happens to me...” He's babbling. Not a good sign. “Or, you know, we can just forget any of this ever happened.”
“You,” Dick says, turning his head to look at Jason, “You want to marry me, 'for legal reasons'.”
Jason shifts. “Well, I don't fucking know. I have a kid to think about.”
“We have a kid to think about,” Dick says softly. “Also, there's the part where I'm in love with you.”
“Yeah,” Jason says, unsteady again. “Yeah, you mentioned that.”
Dick turns back to the window. “It's okay, I didn't expect you to say it back.”
“No, come on,” Jason protests. He's halfway across the room before he even knows he's moving. “You know it's not like – you know, Dick. Jesus, I asked you to fucking marry me this morning.”
“I was there,” Dick replies, the corner of his mouth twitching. “I told you I had to think about it.”
“Yeah, funnily enough, I happened to be there too.”
Dick catches his eyes, and Jason can't look away. “That wasn't really true; I didn't have to think about it at all. I wanted you to think about it.”
“You – ” Jason pauses, lets equal parts relief and fresh anxiety wash over him. “Wow. You Bruce'd me.”
Dick laughs. “I guess I did. Shit.” He grins shyly, then looks up at Jason through his lashes. Definitely intentional. “Still want to marry me?”
Jason adopts a mock surprised expression. “Richard Grayson, are you proposing?”
“No,” Dick says, stepping into his arms, melting against him. “I'm saying yes.”
Jason's heart stammers. “Oh,” he says. “Okay.”
“But,” Dick continues, whispering against his lips now, “You can't leave again, Jay. You can't do that to me anymore.”
“Dick,” Jason says, helpless. “I'm gonna be a shitty-ass husband, I hope you know that.”
“But you'll stay.”
“I mean, I'm signing a contract to that effect.”
“Jason.”
“Fuck's sake. Yeah, I'm staying, I'm not going anywhere, I'm not leaving you or our kid or any of these other fucking people. Are you happy?”
Dick beams. “Sure.”
“Can I fucking kiss you, then?”
Dick doesn't reply, just tightens his arms around Jason's neck and tugs him down, smiles against Jason's mouth and pulls the breath right out of him.
