Y’know I could almost understand the people who assume that Flowery and Asgore have a father/son dynamic if not for the fact that the diner date music is referred to in the files as flowery_diner_romantic. That’s pretty much the smoking gun to me. I do think your post about him being son-zoned is pretty similar to canon intentions (Asgore reminiscing about his kids in some of their scenes and Flowery redirecting, mostly because he doesn’t want Asgore to think about his old family in general but also possibly because he doesn’t want to be painted in the same brushstroke as his kids)
A large part of the misunderstanding is just that people assume because he’s Flowe(r)y, that means he needs have a direct correlation to Asriel. But I feel as if a large part of what makes Flowery work as a character is the EXPECTATION set up by the player for him to be like Flowey, and the ways he ends up subverting those expectations. The chapter has heavy theming of nostalgia and often uses it to for this type of subversion. To me it feels like the point is that while they share some obvious similarities, Flowery isn’t Flowey. I believe the things that make them similar are the most superficial, such as presentation and theming, while the actual contents of his character are what differ wildly (it’s not lost on me that despite Flowey’s ‘kill or be killed’ mentality, Flowery is a boss who both can’t be defeated through violence and will not send you to a game over screen)
But, yeah. I don’t think they’d label a scene between allegorical father and son as romantic for obvious reasons lol. He works way better as a parallel to Rudy and their relationship when you actually examine it beyond Flowery = Flowey.
Pretty much my entire thoughts on the subject as well! I think there could be romantic intent without it ever happening in canon, I think you can ship it and also not want them to get together if that makes sense. You can ship it with one of the characters NOT BEING INTO IT- dynamics are complicated, I love the pairing because of the complexity within it.
Its canonically unrequited, Asgore realizes through Flowery's advances what he's making Toriel feel like (Though on screen we never see Asgore as clearly uncomfortable as Tori, but she's been dealing with his behavior for way longer)
Flowery doesn't equal Flowey, in the same way Ralsei doesn't equal Asriel. They're mixed up, they're new takes on old characters, they're mirrors. they're playing with the concepts of these characters to make something new.
It's wonderful and I love it- It's tragic, it's saddening but it's valid and understandable.
The sadness I get when I think of Flowery is the acceptance of his failure, BUT THATS ANOTHER POST THAT I WILL CRY ABOUT WHEN WRITING LATER
