So I gave in and read your infamous fanfic, and I must say I'm impressed. I'm not one for hartbig fic, but it was written really well. My biggest complaint however is it's ending. Not the "OMG she died!!" part, the epilogue where Amy meets Grace and then just leaves. There is no resolution or even a semblance of a proper ending. It's written as if it's the beginning of another story, where Amy learns to love Grace just as Grace learned to love her. I don't mean to be mean, but come on!
You’re correct, there is no real ending. I wrote a version where Amy falls dramatically into Grace’s arms and it just rang hollow. In that situation, with an angry 18 year old confronting someone who is still deeply damaged by her loss and her own actions, there is no ‘ending’. There’s a lifetime’s worth of work to be done, assuming Amy even wants anything to do with Grace (since she goes to London in the first place mostly to defy Tim) and is presented with something she wasn’t even close to being prepared for. I was trying to write a realistic story about sacrifice and love and loss and grief, which by it’s very nature can have no resolution short of writing a novel-length sequel, so I deliberately left it open.
Also, this was a fantastic message to get. I love detailed criticism, so thank you for making my day!
