Red, boiling sores seemed to bear into the earth like infected roots, snaking across the landscape. The earth was blackened around them, webbed fingers reaching out and killing all that it touched. “Don’t you have to swear to Artemis to be a virgin or something?” Varl butted in. “That’s at least what the Nora say, homage to the virgin goddess and all. It’s like, the next best thing you can be if you don’t have kids to All-Mother.”

Talanah laughed, a bright, melodic sound. “Please! You just have to swear to not get married. If virginity was on the table, I would have been kicked out ages ago.”
