Red, boiling sores seemed to bear into the earth like infected roots, snaking across the landscape. The earth was blackened around them, webbed fingers reaching out and killing all that it touched. It seemed to hiss, a steaming heat of infection and sulfur swirling up around her, stinging her lungs, burning her skin.

Thank you to everyone who waited so patiently for me to get this chapter done! Bad brain vibes got me there for a while, but I’m working on being better about doing my hobbies that make me happy when the world stresses me out (American scientist + queer and disabled...it’s been rough). BUT!!!! New chapter of as mortals do is DONE and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did writing it.

This year has been a revolutionary, reformative year for me when it comes to writing. I didn’t write or publish anything in 2023. And yet, in 2024 I published 126,456 words, more than double anything I had done in the past. Writing that many words, publishing that many words, I could hardly believe it, and I just really proud of myself. For taking risks this year, for finding a community, for really prioritizing the things that make me, me. All I can say is thank you for every single interaction, I would not have made it here without it.

There’s been some special moments this year that have really changed how I’ve written in fandom spaces. Participating in my first ever (on-time) writing challenge with Kyoshi Era Week revitalized me, and really connected me with other writers, removing me from my self-imposed isolation. Everyone who interacted, and continues to make fantastic work for the Kyoshi Novels, thank you.

Those wonderful interactions spurred me to finally join the Kotaloy Elysium server, after so many times lurking in the background, enjoying the work of so many, yet never fully approaching. I’ve been inspired so many times now with the raw talent folks in the KE world have, and am so, so thankful for every single one of them.

I wanted to highlight a couple of pieces that have changed how I write this year. Somewhere only we know was my longest multi-chapter work published before a crown in shadows later this year, and the love I got from the former has pushed me to write longer pieces (and maybe delve back into Supergirl). The latter became my baby, the longest work I’ve ever written, and I’m just really proud (and thankful for everyone who encouraged me to write it).

I wrote a plethora of AUs: social media, science, Olympics/Paralympics, etc. I wrote canon-adjacent, post-canon, and major character death. I wrote fluff and domesticity, I wrote my first ever m/m ship. I wrote a piece in first person. There were so many things I couldn’t have ever dreamed of writing, and yet they became reality. And I can’t thank everyone who has read my work, who has left comments, who got excited at a WIP idea. None of this is possible without you.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Sharing stories is a very core part of who I am, and I got to find that again this year because of you all. And for that, I couldn’t be more thankful.

Last Six Sentences

@flyandfall and @foibles-fables tagged me to share the last six sentences I wrote? (How fun, thanks guys!) More work done on the Jade Shackle AU of the Kyoshi novels.

The glasses and cutlery bounced from the force of her palm hitting the table. A tipped cup rolled, leaving a bloody trail of wine across the lacquered wood they were dining off of. Kyoshi’s hulking form loomed over Tagaka, having lost her patience with the Queen’s tirade. The sound of blades hissing out of their sheathes echoed in the suddenly quiet tent. “You will not address my bodyguard or her mother again,” She said in a tone that felt unlike her own. It was laced with a cold promise, nonnegotiable.
