Flygskam

Flygskam is the Swedish anty-flying movement. In direct translation flygskam means flight shame.

As you know I started this blog to document my journey to eco lifestyle, which means writing about things that I'm succeeding at but also these that I'm failing. So I'm keeping it real and this post is about my defeat.

Few months back I bought plane tickets with my friends and next week we're going to Paris. I'm really exited because I've never been to France. I'm sure that I will enjoy it very much and I can't wait to see the city of lights. However, in the back of my mind I still have this shame of choosing plane — the most harmful to the environment mode of transportation. Once again I’ve proved myself that this blog name was perfect.

France is not that far away from Poland, so I could probably find a train to goes there but being honest it would be really inconvenient, more expensive and also it wasn't only my decision. I know that I make up excuses and it's not changing anything but it's too late to back out, so as I mentioned earlier I want to enjoy it and At this moment I'm feeling guilt, not really the feeling I was hoping for.

Besides excuses, I was looking for some ways to repay for the carbon footprint of this trip. I found out that there are calculators that you can use to see the impact of your journey, then you can pay your carbon offset to chosen organization, plant a tree or multiple trees. To minimize pollution, you're supposed to take as little stuff as you can and fly economic class. Remember that one bad decision doesn't define you, don't give up on being eco on the contrary embrace it, learn from it and don't repeat the same mistakes.

This topic is really difficult for me, on one hand I feel ashamed but on the other I don't want to sound ungrateful. I'm afraid that even thought the decision was made a long time ago the thought of it will affect my trip in bad way. It was a dilemma for me if I even should write about it, but we're all humans, we make mistakes and I don't want to show you only good side of things and maybe you will learn from my slip.

I’m a big fan of @taylorswift but I was really, really disappointed to read her Instagram post after the Paris show. “Thank you to everyone who flew from all over the world“… like, really? Have we learned nothing over the last years about how climate change is ruining our world and aviation is a huge part of that? Do you really want to encourage people flying all over the world for such frivolous reasons as a music show? Were there not enough Parisians or even French to fill up the place? The Swedes have invented the notion of “flying shame”, I’d say it’s about time for Americans to catch up.

L’aviation : le talon d’Achille des émissions de gaz à effet de serre du tourisme mondial. 134.386 vols le 8 juillet 2023, soit la journée la plus dense de toute l'histoire de l'aviation commerciale. Pour lutter contre le réchauffement climatique et anticiper l'épuisement des ressources énergétiques, l'ingénieur Jean-Marc Jancovici plaide pour instaurer des quotas de vols. Selon lui, il faudrait limiter chaque personne à 4 trajets en avion sur toute une vie. Le quota de 3 à 4 vols dans toute une vie, proposé en novembre 2022 par l’ingénieur Jean-Marc Jancovici, avait fait l’effet d’une petite bombe médiatique. C’est sur cette mesure radicale que la journaliste Léa Salamé l’a de nouveau interrogé ce mardi 30 mai sur France Inter.

Il a compris l’urgence, il a décidé d’agir, et radicalement. Yann Woodcock, pilote de ligne depuis presque 13 ans chez Swiss, une compagnie aérienne suisse, a décidé de quitter son poste avec fracas. Dans une longue lettre postée sur le réseau social LinkedIn le 1er mai, il justifie son choix par «l’ampleur de la catastrophe climatique et de l’effondrement du vivant» et revient, avec force d’arguments, sur les raisons qui l’ont poussé à entreprendre ce changement de voie.

«Alors que beaucoup croient en la possibilité d’éviter le naufrage par des ajustements superficiels, les faits scientifiques réclament des changements drastiques dans nos modes de vie, écrit-il. Ainsi, je ne souhaite plus être partie prenante d’une industrie contribuant de manière significative au problème.» Il rappelle que l’aviation émet l’équivalent de 4 % à 6 % des émissions de gaz à effet de serres mondiales, causées «par une minorité» puisque seulement 11 % de la population mondiale prend l’avion.
