Have ever been so filled with eagerness and anticipation that you can hardly wait for whatever is going to happen to happen? Maybe it’s good, like you’re excited about a vacation. Maybe it’s mixed, like you’re waiting on results to see if you got a new job. Maybe it’s bad, like you know you’re going to have to have a difficult conversation with someone tomorrow. But either way, there you are, filled with an energy, a wave that seems to be building right in your heart so strongly so you can feel it, and it almost takes you over. _ Well, I’m feeling like that right now. Something big is coming. I can just sense it. I’m not entirely sure what it is or how it’s all going to work out, but all the cells in my body are almost jumping, revving themselves up. _ I’ve felt like this before, like the day before my husband and I opened @miamilifecenter and we were cleaning the floors and finishing construction and we had to open securely because we didn’t have a permit. Or, like when I first taught a really big yoga class and I was about to do the opening prayer. My heart was beating so hard and so fast so I thought I was going to forget the words or explode. Or when I launched my online @omstarsofficial and so many people signed on and started practicing with us so we broke the internet for a few hours! _ As a yogi, my training is to watch the play of emotions without identifying or getting caught up in them all. Right now, I feel like I’m watching a thriller that’s about to take some kind of crazy, twisted turn. And all I want to know is if you’re here with me to see the story all the way through to the end. We need to look no further than ourselves to recognize that we live in a fallen world. There is not one human being who is perfect, living in absolute Divine harmony. We all stumble and fall. Our mistakes and our failures have the potential to teach us or to destroy us. The yoga practice teaches you how to face the lowest places within yourself and never be vanquished. You learn how to rise again and you find the strength it takes to do whatever it takes, no matter how long it takes. _ It is not our perfection that defines us, but our vulnerability, our broken-heartedness and our weakness. The human experience is about love, a love so big and great that it holds all the good and all the bad, all the light and all the shadow, a love beyond duality. We are not here to sit on the top of a hill and look down on everyone. We are here to live with compassion, to suffer with one another, until each and every one of us is lifted up in the tidal wave of love. _ I cannot count how many times I’ve failed. I make mistakes every day and find myself staring at the mirror image of my own weakness. The strength never comes from me. This “I” of the ego is nothing. The strength is always a gift of Grace that happens when “I” get out of my own way. Yoga isn’t supposed to be easy. In fact, sometimes yoga is designed to be exceedingly difficult and close to impossible. A pose like this illustrates exactly why. _ The first time you see a Chinstand you, like me, might be filled with a mix of awe and paralyzing fear. Thoughts like “wow, I wonder if I could ever do that” sit right next to “wow, if I try that I may seriously injure myself and never walk again”. You decide, like I first did, that the pose isn’t for you. _ Then, as you keep practicing, the pose comes back around. This time you’re a little stronger and more flexible. Your teacher tells you to try, like mine did, and this time you want to try but you’re still scared. Maybe you ask for help. I certainly did. And maybe you surprise yourself that with a little help you can do the pose. But when your teacher is gone you don’t dare to try and the crippling thoughts or doubt return. _ Finally, you find the small seed of faith that you have been nurturing over many years, a little voice that simply says “yes, I believe.” You try. With props and walls and all sorts of half versions of the pose. You fall, tumble and roll out. But you keep trying. And then one day it happens, you find yourself doing the impossible. It wasn’t easy, but there you are miles away from where you started with so much strength than you ever imagined. The pose was hard because you had to climb the highest mountain to tap into the limitless eternality of the spirit within yourself. Bakasana. The crane pose. You might not believe it, but I find this arm balance one of the hardest! My wrists, like my ankles, are relatively stiff compared to the rest of my body. It makes the weight shift forward hard because of the angle needed to make this pose feel light. Then, there’s the massive core strength it takes to pull the sheer mass of the body away from the forward direction of the chest and shoulders. And then, maybe the hardest part, the faith to believe that I could do it, that I could lift myself up. _ Yoga is hard and arm balances are hard. There’s no way to make it all easy. If you think that yoga should be easy you may be depriving yourself of valuable learning. It’s actually when yoga is the most challenging and difficult hat you grow and learn. So many people don’t try hard poses because they feel like they can’t do them. But in the yoga practice it doesn’t matter if you ever succeed. It only matters that you try. The quality of your effort unlocks deep wisdom and spiritual expansion because you learn how to face failure, and accept it with grace and humility. Eventually, whether you get the pose or not, you learn how to keep your peace of mind in body and soul, which is so much more meaningful than any pose. _ And yet, it’s a delicate balance. If you jump too far too fast you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed and even injured. The trick is to practice just at the edge of your limits, try something that is hard but not defeating, and gently push the boundaries of what you believe is possible. Practice is slow, incremental change over the course of your life that delicately bends the arc of your consciousness towards the highest truth and the brightest light. This is why you practice. Any pose, including Bakasana, is just the finger pointing at the moon. It’s not the goal, but a tool to help you realize the goal. _ Day 2 #flylikeayogi is Bakasana, Crane Pose.
