VLM Airlines - Vlaamse Luchttransport Maatschappij (VG/VLM) | Years Active: 1992 - 2016 & 2017 - 2018 | Fleet Size At Time Of Closure: 6 | Operating Base: Antwerp Airport (ANR), London City Airport (LCY) | Reason For Closure: Bankruptcy (2016), Liquidation (2018).⁣ ⁣ VLM began flights between Antwerp and London City Airport in 1993 and over the years grew to become the largest airline at LCY, moving it’s hub to the London Airport. At one point the airline operated over 500 flights per week from London City, routing it’s entire fleet of over 20 Fokker 50 aircraft through the airport on a daily basis.⁣ ⁣ In 2007 the airline was bought by Air France-KLM and merged into CityJet, with the VLM name totally removed from the side of the Fokker 50 aircraft by 2010. In 2014 VLM was separated from CityJet, with the VLM side of the company providing aircraft and crews on an ACMI basis.⁣ ⁣ In October 2014, a buyout by the management resulted in VLM becoming separate from CityJet once again. The airline began operating its aircraft on its own routes from Antwerp as well as providing capacity to CityJet still, however by May 2016 the company had filed for bankruptcy with mounting debts of over €6 million. ⁣ ⁣ The revived airline recommenced services once again towards the end of 2017, including the Antwerp - London City route however by mid-2018 the airline’s continued struggle had resulted in routes and services being cut once again, with the company being liquidated at the end of August 2018.⁣ ⁣ The remains of VLM however would once again rise from the ashes with the formation of Air Antwerp in September 2019. Vlaamse Luchttransportmaatschappij or short VLM is back in business! The airline operates as VLM since nearly one year, all by themselves after having served for CityJet in the past. The airline covers a relatively brought European network to Ireland, U.K., Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and since Monday (15th of February '16) even domestic German routes. They offer service onboard there Fokker 50 aircraft which feature a fresh coat of paint and a new cabin, and they also wait for there Sukhoi Superjets to arrive! Service onboard is great which can be seen in several flight reviews on YouTube, but you can also experience it for yourself as they offer reasonable prices.
