Isa Pa with Feelings

So last night, I watched a 2019 film entitled Isa Pa with Feelings starring Maine Mendoza and Carlo Aquino. I wasn’t able to watch this in cinemas last year but luckily it is now available on Netflix. 

So was it a love story? Yes, a love story about a deaf and a hearing person. Carlo played the character of Gali, a deaf person who has the heart to teach deaf kids to sign language while Maine played the character of Mara, a hearing person and an underboard architect. I thought their encounters were very cute. Gali first met Mara while she was happily grooving at her balcony and on her lowest point.  

At first I was hesitant whether this kind of love story would work but their chemistry was overflowing even just by staring at each other. Their tandem was something I thought I didn’t need but I’m glad it happened. I’m so happy that Carlo was chosen to play as Gali since Gali is a deaf person, his emotions should be felt with his eyes and facial expression and he did not fail to show me that. I was also surprised with how Maine kept up with Carlo’s acting. I didn’t know she was also fit for dramas. The confrontation scene was the scene that highlighted Maine’s acting skills. Maine effectively delivered expressing her emotions and it got me teary-eyed. 

The are instances where the scenes turned quiet, I thought it was just the film’s sound issues but then I realized it was a way for the director to let the viewer experience the world of a deaf person. Their world may be surrounded with silence but their world is still full of color and fun. 

It was a feel good film and it also have a great way of representing the deaf community. You will learn a thing or two on how to communicate with them through sign language. But what I was also looking forward in this film was Mara passing the Architecture Licensure Exam (ALE) which wasn’t shown. But I still recommend this movie!!
