You check your watch. 8:03 pm. You wrap your black duster around yourself and sigh. Eric was never late.
You had made a deal with Eric a year ago now: you would let him walk you home from work every night night you worked.
You lock the door to the bookstore you worked at-Bound. It was a romance book store. You and another woman worked there. Amanda worked fhe mornings, you worked the evenings. Her mother was the manager. She was kind enough.
Amanda and you had a diverse clientele; young women trying out a new genre of fiction, 30 year old’s going through a dry spell, and, of course the bodice ripping-loving Karen. Though you meet new people every day, one of the many perks of this job.
“I see you’re liking this series?” You ask the woman in front of you.
“Yes! I highly recommend it! Have you read it yet?” She says with a smile on her face.
“Not yet, but we do sell a lot of them.” You begin to calculate her total.
“Oh my god. It’s so gay, but the relationship feels so real. And it being written by a queer woman helps it feels more genuine.”
You match her smile, “I’ll add it to my list! Your total is $30.34 today…”
You sigh as it began to rain. You pull your phone out and go to your messages. You click on Eric 🖤🐦⬛ and text him.
You: Everything okay? Just let me know, home still isn’t far, I’ll be fine walking :)
You wait for another five minutes. You check your phone, Eric hasn’t read your message yet. He must be really busy.
Being your city’s vigilante does that.
You pulled your hoodie tighter around you and pull your hood up. You begin your walk home. It was only a 20 minute walk. You knew what areas to avoid.
But tonight was Devil’s Night.
You walked with your home keys splayed out in-between your fingers. You always felt like Wolverine when you did this.
You could smell fires, hear cheering. Your legs carried you faster. You pass the park and see two men lying in the opposite benches. One with a black hat and tattooed, the other pretty scrawny and tall.
You go to walk in the street to avoid them.
“Hey cutie! It ain’t safe walkin’ in the street like that!”
“Yeah we’ll walk you home, wait up!”
You ignore them and fist your keys tighter. God just let me get home, you think.
You feel a tug and are pulled backwards. One of them had grabbed at your bag. They had yanked it off you.
You turned and slapped who had taken your bag. “Give me my bag back now!”
“Oh you stupid bitch!” The one with the hat quickly grabbed you arm and twisted it behind you. You cried out and stomped your feet.
“Stop! Stop stop! Please agh!” You beg.
“We would’ve just let you go, but now… I’m not so sure.” the scrawny one says. His smile grew. He looked malicious.
“Just take my money please! Don’t-“
You’re interrupted by a lightning crash and the sound of a crow. You recognized it. It often was on the roof of your bookstore, many customers had commented on it.
“Stupid fucking bird.” the tattooed one spat.
You gasp at the pain shooting through you, you felt like you were going to pass out when you hear a voice.
“Let go of her now.” It voice was low.
“Or what freak?”
“Or I’ll break the both of you.”
The two laugh. You’re silent. You’ve heard of this man. They called him The Crow. You didn’t know if he would escalate the situation. Maybe he was worse than these men.
“Please just let me go…” you feel your heart pounding in pure fear. Adrenaline suddenly rushed through you. You step on the man’s leg beneath you. your low platforms giving you an extra hard hit.
The man cries out and releases you. “You fuckin’ cunt!”
The Crow begins to stalk towards the three of you.
The adrenaline leaves you and you suddenly pass out on the sidewalk.
-
“Hey wake up for me. Come on…” The voice sounds familiar. You hear the caw of a crow as you open your eyes.
The Crow had leaned you up against a building and looked over your arm. It was fine. The shock is what took you out.
“Oh god! Don’t hurt me please! Just take my purse don’t hurt me please!” You close your eyes
“I am not going to hurt you. I have your things right here. You’re safe. You need to breathe.”
You calm down your breathing and open your eyes. The man in front of you looked frightening yes, but his eyes…they were dark but soft, truthful, and honestly beautiful. He was beautiful.
You check your belongings, everything was there. “Thank you,” your voice was still shaky.
He helps you stand and helps you stretch out your arm. He made sure you were steady on your feet.
You nod your thanks and turn away when you hear, “Let me walk you home.”
The rest is a blur now. He- Eric he said his name was, walked you home. He disappeared as soon as you were in your home safe. You had wanted to thank him.
The next night you were shaky. You were afraid to walk home.
But then you saw him.
“I never got to truly thank you about last night.”
He shakes his head. “No need for that.”
“But surely there something-“
“Y/n,” he grasps his hands in your own. “How about you let me walk you home from now on? I promise i’ll be here, every night.”
Every night? You sigh and begin to walk home. You were exhausted and just wanted your bed and to cuddle your cat.
You finally make it home to your shitty apartment.
You throw your keys on your table.
“Petey!” You cry out. You rub the oncoming sleep out of your eyes. You open your forehead and sigh. You don’t even feel like cooking dinner. You’ll just have a bigger breakfast in the morning.
you turn to go into your room when you hear three spaced out knocks on your door. Eric.
You sigh. You walk over to the door. He turns his head and looks at you. “Please, forgive me.”
“Where were you? You didn’t even answer my text. I was worried.”
“I’m sorry Y/n. You know how Devil’s Night is…”
You nod. “You’re right, but that’s one of the reasons I was worried.”
You place a hand on Eric’s cheek. He leans into it, closing his eyes.
“Can you at least just answer your phone? That’s the whole reason we bought it.” You joke.
Eric nods his head. Yeah, I’ll do better at checking it. Still getting used to it and-“
“Can you stay the night?” You ask.
Eric immediately stops his rambling. He nods.
You pull him in and place your lips on his. He sighs into the kiss.
“You’re all mine tonight, yeah?” You ask.
“Yes ma’am.” Eric says, a smirk growing in his face.
