I got a serious eyeful today from @foam_amsterdam. One of the highlights was this exhibition co-organised by Foam and Hydra, a Mexican photography platform for emerging artists, featuring the work of Nelson Morales @nelsonickfoto and Diego Moreno @diiegotv, exploring two very different aspects of pre-Hispanic culture. Morales' images reveal the culture of the #muxe or #muxhes, the #Zapotec term for #thirdgender, showing how these men, considered a blessing to Zapotec society, have adopted and transmuted the cultural stereotypes of femininity, while Moreno depicts panzudos, pre-Hispanic sin monsters, to honour (or perhaps exorcise) the disfigured aunt missing in his family history.
