I was wondering something, a friend and I have been rewatching fob music videos (newest to oldest) and we're on the Saturday one and are Pete and Patrick supposed to be connected? The same person? Is it symbolizing that they say they can read each other's minds?
Ooh yes, interesting!
Okay, so. We know that Pete is a huge pop culture nerd, he references so many movies and significant cultural events in his lyrics it’s basically copyright infringement 😂 And one of his biggest influences in the early days of FOB seems to be John Hughes movies and the actors who starred in them (known as The Brat Pack).
The running theme is that Pete and Patrick are the same person. That Pete is a manifestation of Patrick’s darker side, or, more likely, Patrick is a manifestation of the goodness in Pete and how it’s never enough to save the people around him from the depths of his darkness. Of course, it ends with Pete killing Patrick, but Pete dies with him.
Now, the pop culture part!
Interestingly, John Cusack (a member of the Brat Pack, by now all grown up) starred in a movie called Identity, released a few months before the Saturday video. In the movie, a killer picks off guests staying in a motel, leaving behind a calling card in the form of numbered keys. Cusack’s character realises that they’re all personality manifestations being “removed” from a patient undergoing therapy, and the parallels are clear in the music video. I do suspect that Pete was heavily inspired by the movie.
