Though I made this “Focusing Attention & Collage Poem” video for 826CHI with a particular group of young students in mind, it is available for use by whomever is interested!
In this creative writing workshop, we spend some time focusing our sensory attention on whatever space we’re in. After collecting several details that surprise us or stand out to us, we use those to make or begin a kind of collage poem. To help along that process, I read two poems by 826CHI students: “Out My Window” by Damoni Martin, Grade 5, and “The Forgotten Side” by Luis C., Grade 8.
My fellow teaching artist Rabha Ashry made a fabulous video for the older students at the same site—with content that is very timely!
