Foley Recording

There are places called ‘Foley Studios’ where sounds for video games and film are organically created. It’s not just about creating sounds for integral moments, it’s creating sounds for nearly everything and anything, from a character’s walk cycle to the sounds of their clothes moving and it’s done in such amazing and unusual ways.

Foley recording is an integral part of any video game and can present quite a few challenges. It’s vital that the sound matches the imagery perfectly in otherwise there will be no making sense of what’s going on around you.

This video of sound design in Pinewood Studios shows and describes Foley recording in gaming, even showing how the sounds were created for one of the games that I own: Alien Isolation.

Fun fact, it seems that Alexis’ wardrobe makes for a quieter recording spot than Concordia’s foley studio, so some of the sounds that could be redone for better results that didn’t require me to be there for the recording, he is redoing himself. For reference, on the lower picture, the first track is the wardrobe recording, with near no accidental room tone, while the second track is the one recorded at Concordia, which features a fair amount of static, buzzing from the nearby lightbulbs, and noises entering the room due to lesser soundproofing.  I guess that goes to say, if you have some equipment at home, and know how to use it... you might as well do that.

Played around with the recording of a permanently creaking door. I processed it by a large Ableton Device Chain. Unfortunately the project got lost on HD crash…

Me and Becca were just doing some foley recording and we made some horse sounds for fun... So I used some logic jam pack nature sounds to make this :)
