Undertow is going to be shown at the Concordia Film Festival on May 4th, at 8pm! Be there or be square!

Fun fact, it seems that Alexis’ wardrobe makes for a quieter recording spot than Concordia’s foley studio, so some of the sounds that could be redone for better results that didn’t require me to be there for the recording, he is redoing himself. For reference, on the lower picture, the first track is the wardrobe recording, with near no accidental room tone, while the second track is the one recorded at Concordia, which features a fair amount of static, buzzing from the nearby lightbulbs, and noises entering the room due to lesser soundproofing. I guess that goes to say, if you have some equipment at home, and know how to use it... you might as well do that.

Yesterday was the music recording for the gamelan ensemble at Redpath Hall of McGill University, as directed by Alexis Côté-Remy for the music he composed, under the supervision of Luigi Allemano and Tristan Capacchione. The experience was incredible, it all went smoothly considering the little time we had to set up and record (one hour total). Our recordist and mixer Mathieu Bourassa did a fantastic job! Louis, illustrator of the film's backgrounds (and boyfriend of mine) joined me to the recording session, and we had a lot of fun. Thanks to the music performers, Véronique Girard, Pascal Ethier-Bergeron, Evelyne Demers, Alexis Fairos, and of course Alexis Côté-Remy.

Kicking the jellyfish - sound recording

Last Monday, Alexis and I went to record our second Foley session - turns out we used a rubber heat pad for the jellyfish sounds, and some cat litter for the footsteps in the sand! I also screamed my heart out in a microphone!

the post-wave reaction, and a POV shot of the jellyfish that won’t be used in the film

Did some tests with the ending of the film, to decide if to add a POV shot or not, and if to cut out the black screen to keep it continuous or not. Version 1′s rhythm was too slow, version 2 is as it was, and version 3 was good but would need some re-cutting to have a close-up of her face as the wave rises before seeing that reaction, which would not be an economical way to spend my time. Since the original version reads well, it will be kept as is.
