Folinic acid - a 5-formyl derivative of tetrahydrofolic acid which is readily converted to reduced folic acid derivatives, thus have vitamin activity equivalent to folic acid. It is used to reduce the toxic effects of other medications like methotrexate and pyrimethamine.
It is used in combination with 5-fluorouracil and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) for the treatment of colorectal cancer, and in combination with 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) for the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer.
