Stone Soup
Title: Stone Soup
Author: Jon J. Muth
Illustrator: Jon J. Muth
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Original Copyright Date: 2003
Summary: Three monks come into a town and makes stone soup with ingredients from the townspeople who were not overly keen on sharing. Key Character: the three monks
Reflection: Sharing is good! More of that if we all work together, we'll be happier kind of thing. I think the corporate world in the US particularly needs much more of this. I can't even imagine how copacetic everything would be if we as a society took this to heart.
The Princess and the Pea
Title: The Princess and the Pea
Author: Rachel Isadora
Illustrator: Rachel Isadora
Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons
Original Copyright Date: 2007
Summary: A prince searches the land for princesses and finds none. A freak storm brings a princess to his front door. She proves she is a princess by sleeping poorly on a pile of matresses with one pea under them. They get married and live happily ever after. Key Characters: The prince, the princess
Reflection: This story makes me terribly sad for little girls who aspire to be princesses, because it sets unrealistic expectations for them. This is generally bad for society in terms of the affect it will have on the psyche of young girls :/ I hope we're actively moving away from this type of implication, because self-confidence is good to have!
The Elves and the Shoemaker
Title: The Elves and the Shoemaker
Author: Paul Galdone
Illustrator: Paul Galdone
Publisher: Clarion Books
Original Copyright Date: 1984
Summary: A poor shoemaker has help from some elves to get rich. He repays them by making them each a suit of clothes. The elves leave. Key Characters: The shoemaker, the elves, the shoemaker's wife
Reflection: Help others and they will help you. This book kind of encourages imagination and fosters the belief in the supernatural, which is not necessarily a bad thing in children. I feel like today's world is pushing children out of their imaginations sooner than it used to, which is in essence robbing children of their childhood altogether.
The Tortoise and the Hare
Title: The Tortoise and the Hare
Author: Janet Stevens
Illustrator: Janet Stevens
Publisher: Holiday House
Original Copyright Date: 1984
Summary: Tortoise and Hare have a race. Hare stops along the way multiple times which allows tortoise to win. Key Characters: Tortoise, Hare
Reflection: The moral of the story is printed so that it's extra obvious. I think the message this book points out that hard work and determination pay off is really important especially in today's society where we value instant gratification so much.
Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Title: Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Author: Lauren Child
Illustrator: Polly Borland, Emily L. Jenkins, Benjamin Duarri
Publisher: Hyperion Books
Original Copyright Date: 2008
Summary: Goldilocks wanders into the bear's cabin and eats their porridge, breaks one of their chairs, and sleeps in their bed. She runs home when they come home and find her there. Key Characters: Goldilocks, Mamma Bear, Papa Bear, Baby Bear
Reflection: The scenery was cool, but I felt that the snapshot style of the scenes confused what my head was picturing. Perhaps if they had more pictures to the words it would have been easier for me to follow.
