Lakes through the haze: on this date in 2013, our Cassini spacecraft had a good view of the liquid hydrocarbon seas that dot the polar regions of Saturn’s haze-enshrouded moon Titan. Titan is the only place in the solar system, other than Earth, that has stable liquids on its surface. In this case, the liquid consists of ethane and methane rather than water. How Light Behaves Near a Black Hole You are looking at a simulation made by scientists of how light passes through the warped space near a black hole to create the shawow we can observe. 🕳 ⠀ Scientists simulated how light behaves as it passes through the warped space around a black hole. A photon can have its orbit bent a little (what they call n=0), or by 180° (n=1), or bent into an actual circle, an orbit around the black hole (n=2 and higher). Each of these then get shot toward us, building up to make a series of rings of light around the black hole. Too close in and the photons get swallowed up by the black hole, creating the dark void in the center, whimsically if not hugely accurately called the black hole's shadow.
