I've had this idea in my head for a few weeks now but never sat down and actually did it, it followed me around, took showers with me, fell asleep with me, we grew very close, and yet I never did anything about it. Inspired by my time at the 99u conference and their mantra of "Make Ideas Happen", this weekend I decided to show up, I sat down, and I got something out of my head. 

This was it. I love the idea that you can identify fonts just by paying attention to the tiniest details of its letters - the classic example is Helvetica and Arial, one's slanted ascenders is often a dead give away when comparing the two, the trick is that most people don't know what to look for. 

Intrigued by the classic comparison, and embracing my inner font geek, I created Spot the Arial where each letter of the alphabet gets its own spread - within which one character is in Arial with all the rest in Helvetica. Can you Spot the Arial for each letter?

Question for font/typeface enthusiasts...

So, I'm working on a set of electrical power maps for work (as in, mapping out circuits in the building and indicating power consumption of various devices so we can figure out how to best plug stuff in without blowing circuit breakers).

I'm doing the drawing in OpenOffice Draw which is working fine from a graphical standpoint so I'm not looking for software suggestions (unless someone happens to know of a free/cheap downloadable software package for Mac OSX Lion specifically geared toward building/utility diagrams).

...but all that said, my actual question is: does anyone have any suggestions for good, readable, sans-serif fonts that work well and remain legible even at very small sizes (as in, down to 6 point font in some places)? The default font (Arial) wasn't thrilling me overmuch so I switched it to Helvetica and while that helped with legibility at smaller sizes, I'm not sure I like the form factor/spacing for this type of work. I'm thinking someone has to have come up with a really nice schematic/technical font that scales well and uses space efficiently (important when you're writing out labels like "flow cytometer" and whatnot on a series of little rectangles) but I haven't found any useful guidelines regarding such things just yet.

The story of two of my favourite fonts...

The font ‘Johnston’ is used for the signs for the London Underground. It was designed in 1916 by Edward Johnston and was also worked on by a guy called Eric Gill who was really into incest and stuff. Eric Gill later went on to design the font ‘Gill Sans’ which was heavily influenced by ‘Johnston’ and is the BBC font.
