Just before the NEXT one, a few memories from the LAST one!

This weekend we host our 5th Cost of Living Crisis Concert in aid of the Robes Project, the only COLCC benefit in 2024. Hands up, who remembers the last one? Event #4 was held in November of 2024 at the Old Dispensary, Camberwell, in aid of Peckham Foodcycle. Here's a selection of photos from that night!

Our billed headliner was HOTMOTEL, who headlined our first funder at OTC in 2022 ...

It didn't quite work to plan though, as MeU with Patrick Lyons, ended up closing the night ...

There were also some unbilled Special Guests, like Mötherwitz Band, featuring Dispensary barkeep Patrick on drums ... we're still grateful for Patrick's donation to Foodcycle from bar proceeds!

Undici had a great night (we saw them and Tahlia Gray at the Herne Hill Music Festival's edition of Junior Open Mic and just had to ask them all to play, both great sets). Those kids are going places ...

Paul Betts of All The President's Men got us started with a brief opening set ...

... and Ed Kingpin, frontman of The Dubious Characters introduced Joe O'Reilly, FoodCycle Area Manager, onto the stage for a few words before the Characters launched into their billed set. Really grateful for their participation - TDC also performed a stripped down set at our 3rd event in Feb 2023 in the Electric Elephant Cafe

Last memory ... MeU and Dubious Characters guitarist Rufus Miller and a FoodCycle volunteer! Rufus has now performed at THREE of our events, which includes a solo set at our 2nd benefit in December 2022!

How wedding leftovers can help curb Indonesia's rampant food wastage

FoodCycle is a new programme in Jakarta that is offering donations of leftover food from weddings to food banks and the city's less well-off

Catering for hundreds, often thousands, of guests is no mean feat. With no lack of luxury, pomp and ceremony, weddings in Indonesia are the epitome of abundance – yet with this comes the inevitable leftovers at the end of a night of revelry.

FoodCycle was launched last year in collaboration with a bridal marketplace startup called Bridestory to offer Jakarta couples the opportunity to donate wedding leftovers to the programme’s partner organisation, Foodbank of Indonesia. Co-founder Herman Andryanto saw the sharp irony that while Indonesia ranks as the second worst food waster on the planet, millions of Indonesians live in poverty. While 7.6% of Indonesia’s 260 million people are malnourished, according to a 2016 report from Economist Intelligence Unit, almost 300 kilograms of food waste is generated per person per year – a number beaten only by Saudi Arabia.

“We have 19 million people sleeping hungry in the country,” said Andryanto. “What I came across were these big numbers – that’s when we decided to take that as our vision. The goal is to make the gap smaller and smaller.”

To date, Andryanto and his team have serviced 37 weddings and transformed two tonnes of leftovers into 2,600 portions of food that have been distributed at food banks in South and East Jakarta.

Andryanto blames poor infrastructure, particularly the lack of cold storage facilities in the country – especially for a big maritime country like Indonesia where seafood is a diet staple – as a major problem in guaranteeing the efficiency of transporting food across the country and minimising waste. The challenge of guaranteeing freshness and quality also comes into FoodCycle’s delivery process, as all the leftovers need to be frozen.

“What we are handling is pre-cooked food,” said Andryanto. “There is a very small window of conservation, so we have to be very, very careful.”

The FoodCycle team is currently doing a crowdfunding campaign to purchase more cold storage facilities so they can expand their reach to Jakarta and beyond – and so they can accommodate more weddings and more hungry mouths per week.

“We plan to triple our operation by the end of December 2018,” said Andryanto. “So hopefully we can reach ten weddings per week, which we can translate into 8,000 portions of food to be distributed.”

This taste of the highlife has not been lost on the food’s recipients, he said: “They are surprised at first because they never expected to receive such quality of food.”

Andryanto said FoodCycle is looking to expand into corporate events and the hospitality industry, as well as partnerships with orphanages.

“We’re very optimistic about where we’re going.”

FoodCycle

While carrying out research into volunteering and food events, I came across - FoodCycle. Mostly they are a national food waste charity based on the simple idea that food waste and food poverty should not co-exist.

They cook every day of the week, cooking community meals across the country. The Sheffield Hub has been running for over two years. FoodCycle bring people together within their community to share a meal from the leftover food they’ve saved from grocery stores which otherwise would have been thrown away.

Their VISION: A society where no one is hungry or lonely

Their MISSION: To nourish communities using surplus food

Their AIMS:

strengthen communities by bringing people together around a healthy meal

encourage friendships by creating spaces for people from all backgrounds and walks of life to have fun together

improve nutrition and reduce hunger by cooking healthy meals for those in need

change attitudes to food by cooking with surplus ingredients and spreading our passion for food and the environment

I want my vision to be in line with FoodCycle. Although mine will be targeted for the elderly so they no longer feel lonely or that they’re missing out a proper meals or restaurant dining. As I’ll bring afternoon tea to them for the experience of sharing food together and making a new connection/ friend with a young person.

My aims will also be in line with FoodCycle. I want this idea to strengthen the community within care homes. To bring people together who mightn’t otherwise engage socially if the afternoon tea event wasn’t on regularly. It will also encourage new friendships through creating an environment where they can meet new young people daily.

The use of colours on the FoodCycle website really appeal to me as they are all aligned with the bright colours of food - Various shades of green and orange. The use of colourful food illustrations also bring a quirkiness to the website and make them stand out from the page to make the site more interesting to look at.

The idea of having extensive statistics on loneliness in elderly people highlighted on my website appeals to me. As this highlights how this is an issue we need to solve by coming together, volunteering and enjoying some afternoon tea.
