The First Thing I Ever Cooked
Was boxed cake mix. I don’t remember if it was yellow cake or chocolate cake, but I know it was Duncan Hines (we always bought Duncan Hines) and there was boxed frosting to go with it.
It was the beginning of a love affair with baking (and cooking) that endures till this day.
It was also the beginning of an appreciation for the simple recipes, the ones that ease you into the process through a quick succession of steps, followed by a reward that you can only called earned.
