unfortunately i do not have any questions about not!fic however i would like your headcanons about lando and oscar are 5 years after spy fic if you have any :)
Oooo, thank you for the ask!
Imma be straight with you, the further I get from the fic the more I've been sold on it as jendo endgame. HOWEVER, that's not how I wrote it, and I think there's a real beauty in keeping that loving ex relationship, so!
Oscar applied in the heat of the moment and then had a whole crisis of conscience about his family and spent most of the time waiting for HR to get back to him thinking about whether he could actually be someone who lies to everyone he knows all the time. He talks to Lando a bunch and Mark a bunch and Jenson, once. It's the conversation with Jenson that finally provides the clarity he needs.
Lando takes an overseas station while Oscar is in training. It's his first two-year post, so it's probably somewhere like Mumbai or Karachi. They talk maybe once a quarter, when Oscar's liberty lines up with Lando's time zone. They don't talk about anything before they separate, so Lando doesn't act like he has anyone waiting back at home. But when he thinks about what he'd like, he thinks it could be nice. He learned from his relationship with Jenson, certain mistakes he wouldn't repeat. Mistake one is taken care of anyway, since Christian already knows about them. After two years out of country, Lando gets to come home.
Oscar enjoys the technical and tactical side of the job and doesn't particularly enjoy the people part of it. Unfortunately for him, he has a knack for it. He's good with detail, getting people to have an entire conversation and not remember much about him after the fact, acting like he belongs in a way that doesn't raise questions. That aptitude keeps him busy. He and Lando overlap in London for about two months before Oscar gets sent off to an advanced targeting course. They decide it's easier if Lando takes over Oscar's flat while he's away. Lando hasn't found a new place yet, and Oscar's would just be sitting empty, after all.
Oscar gets back from training and sleeps for approximately 48 hours straight before using the rest of his leave for marathon sex with Lando. Lost time, and all that. It's easy enough to justify keeping the shared place given how rarely they're in the same place at the same time.
By the time Lando gets slotted to Johannesburg a year later, the goodbyes are starting to get a little bit harder. They're both stupidly stoic about it, and they both regret it as soon as they're too far apart to do anything about it. Joburg is only an hour ahead of London though, and Oscar can call Lando from the tiny fucking 1-bedroom flat that has the audacity to feel EMPTY now that he thinks of it as theirs. Until he can't, because Lando goes radio silent for weeks at a time. Needs of the mission, and all that. Oscar knows what he signed up for but he worries, all the same. Carlos tells him he can see the stress in his work. Oscar drily points out that they're only modifying radios, and Carlos says that is exactly what he's saying. Oscar goes tense and quiet and Carlos takes him out for a pint later and they don't talk about the reports coming out of South Africa at all. Lando video calls the next time they talk, and Oscar's so relieved to see his face he thinks he might cry.
Oscar gets himself a 90-day post in Nairobi that has nothing to do with his specialty. Christian raises an eyebrow at the request but he approves it and leaves a post-it on Oscar's desk that says "still a 4 hour flight."
They only get to see each other once during the TDY, but it makes the battery of pre-travel vaccinations worth it.
When Lando gets home from South Africa, Oscar finds three new scars on him in the shower. When he asks about them, Lando asks if they should get married. "Because they'd have to post us together," he says, like an apology for even voicing the suggestion.
Oscar's first two-year post is in Lagos.
He'd slotted for it before Lando got back from Joburg, before he'd asked if they should get married, before he'd leaned his forehead against Oscar's shoulder in the shower and displayed a fresh scar on his shoulder, startling pink against his tan skin.
They overlap for about a month in London, and then the flat is Lando's. This is probably when he gets the cat. The lease says no pets, but whatever, there's at least one crusty white dog in the building that's been there longer than Oscar. He's more of a dog guy, but dogs are hard in their line of work. Besides, Spymaster McGee (Geezer, Guy, G-man, Wheezer, Whiskers) will play fetch, so it's pretty close.
Lando puts in for Brussels. He figures he deserves somewhere nice for his third post, thinks he might get it. He figures Oscar is hoping to stay in London. Brussels to London isn't so bad.
