i need you to be my boyfriend  ——  just for tonight. any other circumstance and maybe that would have sounded very briefly like a horrible way to ask for a hookup...  but this isn’t any other circumstance. familiarity in these moments, the man coming in well after samuel had turned in for the night with a book and zero intentions to actually sleep  (  when did he ever manage to sleep?  )  and asking for a favor. usually it was business meetings, a fake name and some elaborate backstory. this? this was certainly new. maybe hitting a little too close to home, even.   ❝  ...sure, rafe. whatever ya’ need.  ❞     /     @foolsgvld.

touches sam's butt

the public displays of affection certainly weren’t absent from their relationship. few and far between, sure, and absolutely scarce when it came to the younger initiating it. something seemed a little more special on those occasions, even when it was something like this. the touch is familiar, which causes his attention to shift to the man now beside him  ——  his person inching forward half an inch out of natural habit  (  as anyone would when their backside was being grabbed, he’s sure.  )   ❝  heeeeey, ❞   a soft laugh as the shuffle of feet adjusts their position, samuel now facing the other and reaching out to wrap calloused fingers around his wrists, pulling him in.   ❝  you’re late, y’know that, right? thought y’were gonna stand me up’re somethin’.  ❞

                                               ‘YOU’RE JOKING, RIGHT?’   he scoffs, shifting his weight from one foot to the other & shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans, feeling the nearly non-existent seams, the worn-out denim. He’s used to conditions like this, Rafe Adler obviously isn’t.   ‘No way. There’s no way.’

❝  you’re actually a disaster, y’realize that, right?  ❞   despite the complete seriousness of the statement, there’s a lift to his voice...  something that would suggest it be said in jest, if it weren’t for the circumstance between them at the moment. you could blame it on the time together, maybe. blame it on rafe’s stubbornness. blame it on samuel’s undeniable instinct to care. lips twist into a smile that's anything but kind   ❝  i dunno who the hell made y’this way, rafe, but god forbid anybody show any sign’a wanting to help you, and you’re threatening them.  ❞   he should hate him  ——  he wants to hate him; an unwanted debt that he’s been forced to repay for the last year and a half. hatred toeing the edge but not quite spilling over.   ❝  tell me how i’m supposed t’give a shit about helping you with this damn treasure, when y’don’t give a shit enough to let me unless s’convenient for you?  ❞     /     @foolsgvld !

if the younger had aimed for subtly, it was certainly a lost cause  ——  samuel was always aware of the eyes on him, noticing the smiles in his peripheral vision when he did something in particular  (  mumbled latin while skimming books.  )  admittedly, it was cute...  not that he would say that aloud, but he wasn’t going to keep himself from silently admiring.   ❝  ——  s’there somethin’ on my face ?  ❞   an inquiry given as a segue, a means of outwardly expressing that the stares had gone noticed, but that he didn’t quite mind  ——  a way to allow rafe to know that he wasn’t being as sneaky as he thought, though hopefully not discourage him from continuing the behavior.

➔  AND THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES  /  ❝  some stories just end before they can reach the happily ever after point. sometimes, there is no happily ever after. or it may be meant to imply that the adventuring life is their happily ever after, especially if they have recently contemplated quitting and decided against it, or recently regained their ability to continue. the purpose behind this idea is to explain that the world that these characters inhabit is much, much larger than the stories that have been written about them. 

this is, quite obviously, in reference to the ending on the docks ! sam turning down nathan’s offer to stay in his guest bedroom and deciding to go with sully to wherever destiny may take them next; even going and saying, “you got a few lost cities on me.” though said in jest, of course, in a much less i need to outdo him way than rafe had. basically sam trying to spend his days doing what he wished he could have been doing while stuck in prison for thirteen years  ——  adventuring.

            a lopsided thing of a smirk settled on easy features at the other’s tone ; it was always something of a GAME to see how fast he could get under rafe adler’s skin. the kid got riled up way too easily sometimes, but it still held true that hearing that certain level of irritation ignite his words made his skin downright TINGLE. it was childish, maybe          but, well.

            who DIDN’T like to toy with the privileged few every once in a while ?

                “      aw, c’mon, son          don’t like playin’ this game anymore ? y’can call it quits, i won’t hold it over ya TOO harshly.      ”    blatant lie.    “      gimme a lil more’a that sass, hm ?      ”

you already know i love you and sam so much but!! i'll never be over just how much you /get/ his character and how perfectly you write his little nuances and capture his voice whilst bringing so much more to him and i'm just?? always in awe at everything you write

listen……… so much of the way i write / how i write sam relies so heavily on those i’m interacting with. wonderful writers bring out the best in me, too, y’know? but you in particular have been such an immense inspiration for me and my desire to better my prose and whatnot. so thank you for being so ridiculously kind and sweet to me… but also thank you for being such an incredible writer? it’s been an absolute joy to toss these two into certain situations and i honestly wouldn’t be where i am right now without such a huge motivator. thank you for being fantastic and thank you for giving me a case of the smiles. <3
