it feels like deja vu , so much like the bad old days that azalea has to stop and take stock --- surroundings are decidedly not the grim shithole that was the isle of the lost , she's wearing clothes that she hadn't had to fish from the garbage piles and fashion into something not horrendous ... and , in a similar vein , the makeup she wears she'd actually bought. so they're not in some weird time - warp , this is still new ren that she's looking at ... he just happens to be saying something that would've sounded far more normal coming from his mouth a few years prior. ' I had dress rehearsal ... ' it falls from her lips matter - of - factly as she slips into a seated position , bending forward to carefully remove her heels. pads of her fingers move to lightly massage at her ankles with a tired exhale before she turns her gaze towards ren once more. ' if I'd known you were that desperate , I could've gotten you in. front row seat. ' one perfect brow raises toward her hairline , red stained lips pressing into a thin line before she speaks again. ' what's the occasion ?? '

there  is,  in  retrospect,  a  slight  chance  he’d  gotten  carried  away  in  the  screen  lit  on  desk.  it  isn’t  even  his  work,  a  paper  he’s  promised  to  sift  through  for  mistakes  and  edits  for  a  fellow  student  of  quantum  mechanics.  it’s  not  a  very  easy  class  to  get  into,  part  of  the  reason  he’d  assumed  it  would  be  an  easy  and  quick  sort  of  favor.  instead,  he’d  been  barraged  with  errors,  so  often  and  confusing  it  was  a  little  difficult  to  pinpoint  how  to  fix  without  rewriting  entirely.  finding  a  way  to  tell  adam  he’d  be  better  off  doing  that  exactly  had  been,  by  far,  the  most  stressful  part  of  the  whole  thing.  

ridley  wasn’t  cruel  enough  to  leave  him  hanging,  despite  the  following  paper  rehaul  taking  several  hours  of  joint  work  and  ridley  resisting  the  urge  to  do  it  himself.  they’re  more  or  less  toward  the  tail  end,  a  question  about  quantum  field  theory  coming  through  one  airpod  when  the  noise  starts  up  in  the  hallway.  it’s  a  familiar  voice,  a  familiar  bark,  an  attention  pulling  siren  sound.  he  only  manages  to  answer  the  one  question  before  laughter  breaks  through.  almost  offhand  he  bids  a  goodbye,  shutting  the  laptop  and  promising  to  check  over  the  end  result  tomorrow.  

when  he  opens  the  door  it’s  to  ren’s  hands  in  the  shape  of  a  mock  gun,  barrel  pointing  directly  to  chest.  pebbles  is  beside  him,  far  too  excited  for  ridley’s  apparent  arrest.  he  plays  along,  smile  poorly  bitten  down  as  he  mimics  surrender.    ❛   be  careful,  ren.  wrongful  arrest  is  no  laughing  matter.   ❜

❛   yes , you would.   ❜   his heart can’t settle on a feeling for a moment , expression going through flickers of sad , exasperated , before settling on something painfully endeared.  they both love each other , and they would both lie to each other , and it’s probably something they should both work on. he’s not particularly thrown off by that , it’s far from a revelation.  he’s glad it flies under the radar of his many , many sensitive spots. 

under covers his ankle hooks over one of ren’s , a small movement aiming for comfort.  ❛   you’d only do it because you wouldn’t want me to feel bad , or freak out , or anything else in that category of reaction , but you would.   ❜   and it would be a lie to say ridley wouldn’t  — hasn’t — done the same , before.  ❛   i get that , i wasn’t saying you have to talk to me , anyway. i just  ——  you could , if you wanted.  i promise i would do my best to be ... reasonable about it.   ❜

it’s only on the second call of his name that ridley really intends to move from his spot. not until the fifth that he actually does.  his focus is one-track and the track he’s on doesn’t involve dinner  ,  or lunch  ,  or whatever it is that ren is calling him for from their kitchen. he’s dimly aware that he’s not sure what time it actually is. he has a recollection of ren getting home  ,  saying hi to him from exactly where he’d been sitting for hours poking around mechanisms that still didn’t want to work with him some time later.  it takes him another minute to stretch out his limbs  ,  he thinks he can hear ren grumbling  ,  though it’s quieter than before.

he’s expecting ren to be in front of the stove  ,  for the most part. maybe looking around the cabinets  ,  not standing in the doorway  ,  but that’s where he finds him instead. one-track mind  —  it’s not subtle  ,  in retrospect  ,  but he’s too set on his boyfriend to take any note of something hanging above his head.  he doesn’t notice at all until he’s already in his space  ,  and even then it’s not without it being borderline pointed out.  ❛  oh.   ❜   his chin tilts upward  ,  confusion evening out and lips quirking up at corners.

ren seems pleased with himself  ,  increasingly so when ridley hooks a finger on the bottom of his shirt to tug him a step closer. he leans in  ,  doesn’t tilt his head until the last second to press a kiss to his cheek  ,  instead.  quick  ,  the same as the one dropped on mouth soon after.   ❛   that’s actually holly.   ❜

❛   i’m breaking out  !   ❜  it’s bordering on a squeak  ,  hands rising protectively to his face before they halt midair.  it’s his first instinct  ,  but he quickly recalls the homemade mask thats coating what he was a second from touching and decides against it.  his hands fall back to his lap instead  ,  features remain even with lips set in a thin line.  he huffs  ,  discontent  ,  gaze set on a mirror and staring at his reflection with a look like it’s personally offended him  ,  which isn’t too off the mark.  ❛   stress  ,  maybe.  it looks weird  ,  but it’s mostly just oatmeal.  which we’re out of  ,  now  ,  by the way.   ❜
