(Nearly) all the ways Francesco Algarotti had been called a fop by 18th & 19th century authors:

Premise: during his life (1712-1764), Algarotti attracted the love but also the contempt of many of his contemporaries, especially of the fellow italians. In the 19th century he was considered the epitome of all the frivolities and flaws of his century. Most of these descriptions are meant to be derogatory, but to me they only make him more iconic.

a consummate coxcomb;

nutriva un po' troppo i capegli e [...] d'odorose essenza oliva mollemente (he took too much care in his hair and he languidly smelled of perfumed essences);

freluquet (the french equivalent of a coxcomb);

Adonis manqué (failed Adonis):

zerbino in parrucca spada e manichini, tutto riverenze e minuetti (simp in a wig, rapier and mannequins, all curtsy and minuets);

azzimato sempre e in fiocchi, col belletto e co' nei (always a dapper with ribbons, rouge and moles);

enfant terrible of the 18th century;

piccioletto della persona, ma tutto pepe, liscio, azzimato ed attilatuccio (short in stature, but all pepper, smooth, well-groomed and slinky);

il vagheggino, il cicisbeo, il figlio degenere del Settecento (the beau, the gallant, the debauched son of the 18th century);

the dapper Algarotti, philosopher for ladies, versifier for kings, and hanger-on of celebrities, his long beaked face peeping out from a huge wig and pelisse.
