The Scarecrow notices when Dorothy can’t sleep. He notices, and he talks to her. About little nothings, at first, gradually building into conversations and familiarity. Then one night, as if he's been building up to it, he says, very softly, “She's not as wicked as they say.“
READ ON AO3
During the day, when they’re moving, traveling, marveling at the wondrous sights of Oz, everything seems fine. Or as fine as things can be, when on the other hand her life is upside down and she’s trapped in a strange world and everything is just a little bit terrible.
Her companions are pleasant enough, if endlessly strange, and while their mission is odd and uncertain, something fuzzy around the edges of this place keeps it from feeling truly frightening.
But at night, when she can’t sleep, afraid of the way the bright colors still dance behind her closed eyes and the unfamiliar sounds creep into her ears, the Scarecrow notices.

astarion/m!tav, rated M for discussions of consent issues in sex
When Astarion put a moratorium on sex, he’d assumed it would mean the end of his free meals. After all, that had been part of the trade– his body in exchange for Riesling’s loyalty and blood. And yet, here he is, reclining on a pillow while Riesling casts Lesser Restoration to remedy fresh blood loss. There’s still salt and iron on his tongue, and his skin tingles pleasantly, all the way down to his fingertips. He feels warm, satiated, and happy, all of the price of… nothing. It feels too good to be true.

Unknotted (Part 5)
(Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4) Cancer? He became immediately aware of the weight of her on his shoulder. He looked down and saw her hand and reached out for it. She squeezed his left arm and he heard her drowning in salt water and streaming guttural noises. He let her empty her eyes into his shoulder, and stroked her arm. He wanted to go back to before that sentence, but he had only silence now.
Jeanean suddenly straightened her back and eyed him, and he put his palms to her cheeks, first one then the other. She spoke. "I don't know... I don't know what to do. It's brain cancer, Dan. They don't want to give me a timetable. Say they are optimistic. How?" She grasped his wrists, took his hands and wrapped them around her. Then she sat on his lap and he held her while she curled up.
"Do you need money? Look if you need money, Jeanean, you know I have been blessed in this life by God and it means nothing to me; I will support you through this time, even if I can't understand why the Lord would take one of his angels." He involuntarily lapsed into tears, but he held steady. He was not allowed, could not allow himself, desperately needed to keep himself from being selfish in this time. People try to make it about themselves. Even by thinking that he thought he was making it about himself.
"No..." she trailed off. She was somewhere else. He knew it. Then she came back and continued, "I just... I don't know. My cousin's been helping me, and I don't know where else to turn. My parents..." He nodded. Both gone. Normalcy never seemed such a blessing to him until he put that all together. She had closed her eyes and then she opened them back up and looked at him. She still was in his lap and their mouths were inches apart. He watched as her teeth went back to her lips and he realized she had been biting them hard enough to draw blood.
"Dan, there's something else." She put her head on his chest and he closed his eyes.
"What is it?"
She had her eyes closed too. They weren't on a bench in California anymore. They were weightless, and bashful. He never felt so ungrateful but even though she had the death sentence she told him, "it's going to be ok."
He smiled, despite the moment. "Aren't I supposed to tell you that?"
She shook her head, rubbing his chest with her nose. "No," she said. "You're not allowed to say that unless this ever becomes over. Either by me dying or the specialists and nurses and doctors giving me a clean bill of health."
She tilted her neck up and said, "open your eyes," and he did, and they looked at each other and she said, "That's not the something else." She untangled her left arm from his and put her hand on his right cheek. He never looked away from her oceanic eye and when she leaned up towards him he met her and for a few moments he believed her that everything would be ok. He was torn though. Was he taking advantage of her? Here he was, ruining the moment.
She pulled back, and in the smallest voice he ever had heard her use, like a murmur in a hurricane, "Dan, I'm a virgin. And if I'm going to die, I want to be with someone..."
Her lips disappeared as she pursed them and opened her eyes wide as if she dared him to speak. The truth was he had no idea what to say. What are you supposed to say? His first instinct was to kiss her and he did. They kissed ruffly, like a plump woman slurping a sundae on a hot summer day.
She grinded on him and he wanted her to stop. If he released in his pants it would be obvious and messy, so he couldn't have that. "Stop," he plead, "slow down." She stopped and buried her head in his chest. She put his right hand down her top and made him touch her.
"Feel me," she hissed. --
