Reasons My Son is Crying; Rosen Ritter Reuenthal AU

title: Reasons My Son is Crying, by Oskar von Reuenthal 

summary: A side story (a list, really) from the Disaster Dad Reu ‘verse (which you can see in it takes a battalion). In which Reuenthal was “encouraged” to maintain a logbook to learn from his parenting experiences. 

Felix is anywhere between six months to a year and a half in this. 

backstory: Rosen Ritter Reuenthal, attempting to raise Felix as a single father, is rescued from his disaster dad train wreck existence by Schönkopf and the Rosen Ritter.

pairing: None here. 

Warnings: A for Attempted Humour. G rated.

And inspired by my huge, wild and crazy Dad’s side of the family... I might never have written this if I hadn’t spent the last weekend on a tiny tropical island with all of them. No wonder I turned out like this. /laughs. 

Reasons My Son is Crying, by Oskar von Reuenthal

1.              I have no clue.

2.              I don’t know why.

3.              He does not want to sleep.

4.              And does not want to wake up.

5.              He was not allowed to pull Admiral’s tail.

6.              I would not let him sleep in the armoury.

7.              [written in a bold hand] I am not as handsome as Schönkopf.

8.              At my wits end as to why.

9.              [written in a slanting hand] I am not as clever as Dusty.

10.          I did not agree that Yang’s desk is a suitable place to sleep, regardless of whatever Yang thinks, does and/or encourages.

11.          I did not let him drink Yang’s tea.

12.          I will never know.

13.          He was not allowed to investigate that explosion.

14.          Not allowed to climb on top of the ship console. Even if Yang is allowed to do it all the time.

15.          [written in a scrawling hand] I am not as dashing as Poplin.

16.          He was not allowed to drink whatever Schönkopf and the others were drinking.

17.          Not permitted to have a sleepover on the Hyperion.

18.          I refused to let him fire the Thor Hammer.

No matter what scenarios he could have come up with, seeing Derek Hale, his super handsome and single dad neighbor, looking slightly panicked with his hand still raised to knock was not what he expected.

summary: AU: Rosen Ritter Reuenthal, attempting to raise Felix as a single father, is rescued from his disaster dad train wreck existence by Schönkopf and the Rosen Ritter.

pairing: None here, but Schönkopf/Reuenthal if you’re minded to see it. 

Setting: Rosen Ritter Reuenthal AU (backstory is too long for the purposes of this fic, maybe one day in a different story), Felix happens and ends up with Reuenthal the way he does in the OVA.

Update: 15 Aug 2018: Has a side story (list, really) Reasons My Son Is Crying.

Someone is banging at the door.

It is absolutely the last thing Reuenthal needs right now.

He looks down wearily at the wailing child in his arms. He doesn’t even have the energy to sigh, but he shifts Felix to his shoulder and gets up with some difficulty.

Felix takes the change in altitude poorly and cries harder.

The room seems to swim as he crosses the room to the door.

He has to make a conscious effort to think about how to work the locking mechanism, during which time the hammering at the door intensifies.

The door swings open to reveal an extremely irate Schönkopf, who seems about to launch into an angry tirade before he catches Reuenthal’s eyes, takes in the wailing baby on his shoulder, and just closes his mouth.

The next words out of Schönkopf’s mouth are not the ones Reuenthal expects.

“You look awful.”

Reuenthal really has nothing he can say to that, so he says it.

Schönkopf stares at him and his son for a heartbeat before he seems to come to a decision.

“Give him to me.”

Somehow, Reuenthal can’t quite comprehend that request.

“Hand the boy over. No one on this level is getting any sleep like this.”

Oh.

He nearly fumbles as he detaches Felix from his shoulder, which causes Felix to wail impossibly louder. Schönkopf steps in pre-emptively and takes Felix from him.

Reuenthal tries not to stare as his commanding officer settles his son in his arms. To his surprise, Felix… isn’t crying harder.

They watch in silence as Felix actually settles in Schönkopf’s arms. When the crying miraculously subsides into hitching sobs, Schönkopf turns his attention to Reuenthal.

“When did you last sleep?”

Reuenthal has to think about this, but his thoughts keep trailing off, and eventually he shakes his head when it’s clear Schönkopf is still waiting for an answer.

“Hopeless,” Schönkopf mutters.

Reuenthal would normally have bristled at this, but these are not normal circumstances, and he is just so tired, and so abjectly grateful.

“I could kiss you,” he murmurs.

Tired as he is, he marks the way Schönkopf’s shoulders stiffen at his comment, but he’s too exhausted to think more on it. If he’s offended Schönkopf he’ll deal with it later. Whenever that is. “Go to bed,” Schönkopf says dismissively. Felix is snuffling weakly against Schönkopf’s shoulders now. At least he isn’t howling any more.

Reuenthal thinks he should be doing… something. “That is an order,” Schönkopf says firmly.

Even in his exhausted state Reuenthal recognises that tone. “Yes, sir,” he answers, executing a sloppy salute.

As he collapses into bed, he wonders what that alien sound enveloping his quarters is.

Before sleep claims him, he realises it is silence. 

End Notes: Insert Rosen Ritter regimental dads shenanigans. They draw up a roster, everyone takes turns with varying levels of success, epic failure, and everything else between. Lots of disaster Dad Reuenthal because that is exactly how it would go. 

There would have been more to this story if I hadn't been interrupted twice for impromptu fashion clinics for a cousin’s beach wedding next week. It’s quite a perspective shift to jump from writing in spartan space military quarters to trying flowery summer dresses for a beach wedding. ^^
