Life is tied to death But life is not equal to death. A god may count the days of life but not the days of death. The day when life is over is of greater weight.
Utu the Hero, transl. from Sumerian by Christopher Metcalf (2011). This passage travelled widely and was eventually adapted by the Hittites into the Prayer of Kantuzili.

See the thing about life is that it goes on.... Things change. You must accept that. Don't be sad about it. Because change is often for the better. And revenge is for the weak, so you might as well settle your vendettas. Change is a wonderful thing, but you must let the right things change. Let love change you. Act always with love and you will overcome a great many things. You will find that if you act kindly to people, kindness will find its way around. You never will truly know the impact of kind words or kind deeds, but do them any way. Take heart in the fact that you are changing the world without even knowing it, and that is a very powerful thing. Mother Teresa said: "we can do no great things, only small things with great love." And that's true, but over time these things will build. These little acts will grow and your entire span of life will become something great and grand, for we are all a part of this great thing we call life. So live you life with love, and slowly change the world. You are powerful. You are brave. You are loved.

Midnight Memories - A One Shot
“Ugh, fuck this stupid thing,” Libby said as she threw the bow she’d been trying to put in her hair down onto the counter. “I don’t know why I even bother trying to look cute. Nobody’s going to notice if I have a bow in my hair or not.” She groaned before taking a deep breath and trying again. She grabbed her ponytail and pushed a few bobby pins through the bow and into her hair, finally getting it to go in the way she wanted it to.
“FINALLY!” she said, relieved. She left the bathroom and went to get dressed. She found dark skinny jeans and white sandals, and threw on a cute black top to go with the rest of the outfit. She slid the shirt carefully over her head, so as not to ruin her hair. When she was finally pleased with how she looked, she grabbed her purse and went downstairs.
“Hey, Mom… I’m going out tonight. I’ll be back late, so don’t wait up,” she said. Her mom raised an eyebrow.
“Where the hell are you going?” she asked.
“Some friends and I are going to some club,” Libby replied. Her mom rolled her eyes.
“Fine, but don’t be out too late, okay? And don’t do anything stupid.”
“I won’t, Mom. I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye!”
She walked out of the kitchen and went outside where her friends were already waiting in the car for her. She crawled into the backseat.
“You ready to have some fun tonight?!” one of the girls asked.
“Hell yeah I am!” Libby replied. The four girls drove off down the road towards a new club that was in town. They all had said that they were just going out for the fun of it, but Libby was the one who had suggested going in the first place – One Direction was in town and had a show that night, and she was hoping that one or all of the boys would go to the club afterwards to unwind and hang out. None of her friends really liked One Direction all that much, but she knew that they would understand if she ditched them to hang out with one of the boys, had they been there.
They arrived at the club about fifteen minutes later and parked the car. The four of them got out of the car and closed their doors all at the same time.
“No matter what, we have to stick together, okay?” one of the girls asked.
“Yeah, yeah, sure,” Libby said. She wasn’t really focused on her friends anymore; she just wanted to get inside and find the boys. Their show was only five minutes away, and the hotel was just down the block. There’s no way they won’t come here, she kept telling herself. She subconsciously checked the bow in her hair and smoothed out her shirt.
After having a few Shirley Temples and dancing with her friends, Libby began to wonder if the boys would ever show up. She started to feel disappointed before she reminded herself that it wasn’t like she’d had a date with any of them; she was just hoping that they’d wind up in the same place together. But just a few minutes after she’d finally convinced herself that the boys weren’t going to show up and she should just try to have fun, two extremely familiar looking boys walked in.
He was unmistakable; those big, green eyes, that smirk, and the mop of curls on his head. That’s Harry Styles, Libby thought. Holy shit… He’s actually here! He was wearing a black button-up shirt with white hearts all over, black skinny jeans torn at the knees and back pockets, and his infamous brown boots. He looked incredible.
Behind him stood Niall Horan, rocking a bro tank with the America flag on it and jeans, his blonde hair a cute, spikey mess and his blue eyes shining bright. Libby was dying to run over to them and squeal like the fangirl she was, but she didn’t want to turn the boys off from her. She continued dancing with her friends, keeping her eyes on the boys as they walked to the bar and ordered drinks. They both sat down, conversing with each other and looking out at the crowd. Libby caught Harry’s eye and she blushed. She tried to hide it, but she couldn’t. Harry smirked at her and leaned over to whisper something in Niall’s ear.
Is he making fun of me? Shit, did I already blow it?? she thought. Suddenly, Harry stopped talking and Niall was nodding, looking at Libby. He said something to Harry and Harry smiled before he stood up. He made his way across the dance floor but didn’t invade Libby’s group of friends. He stayed just far enough away that none of the other girls would even notice him. He used his head to signal that she should go near him.
“Uh… Girls, I’ll be back I uh… Gotta… Pee. Yeah, I gotta pee I’ll be back in a bit,” Libby lied.
“Ooooh I’ll come with you!” one of the girls said. Libby groaned internally.
“No, no… I think it’s a single person kind of bathroom.”
“You’re right… I’ll go when you’re back, then!” the girl replied. Libby tried not to roll her eyes before finally pulling away from the group. She began walking towards the bathroom until she knew she was out of sight from her friends, then she made her way back into the crowd and towards Harry. He wasn’t exactly hard to find, either; he was the tallest one in the room, though she wasn’t really that much shorter. She walked up to him and immediately felt herself blush. He looked even better in person than he did in the millions of pictures she’d seen of him.
“Hi, I’m Harry,” he said. She smiled when he held out his hand. Pff, womanizer my ass, she thought as she remembered all of the terrible things that had been said about him in the press.
“I’m Libby,” she replied. She took his hand and shook it.
“It’s nice to meet you,” he stated. A song had just ended and the two of them were waiting for the next one to come on. “Would you er… like to dance? With me?” She smiled at how nervous he was; she’d never expected Harry Styles to be the one getting nervous around her, she thought it’d be the other way around. Meanwhile, she was feeling more confident than ever. After all, Harry Styles had picked her out of a crowd of girls.
“I’d love to!” she shouted over the song that had just started. Harry swayed his hips ever so slightly, and Libby remembered that he was a terrible dancer. She wondered if maybe he was trying not to look stupid.
“You’ve gotta loosen up a little bit,” Libby said. He looked up at her, shocked. “C’mon, move your hips… You’re a musician, you’ve got to know how to let the music move through you!”
“Wait, you… You know who I am?” He asked her the question as if he’d thought nobody in small-town Wisconsin would know who he was.
“Of course I know who you are. You’re Harry Styles, the curly-headed boy from One Direction. What, did you think nobody here would know you?” she asked.
“Well… It’s a small town,” he said.
“Well, we do have TV and Internet here in this small town, you know,” she replied. He chuckled and shrugged his shoulders.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Now, what were you saying before?”
“You need to loosen up. You’re too stiff. Let the music move through you, like this,” Libby said. She put her hands on his hips and, when she moved her hips, she pushed his, too. He was still really stiff and she just gave up and hoped that if she let go a little more, he’d loosen up – and he did.
Soon the two of them were moving in sync with each other and having a blast. Libby had completely forgotten about her friends, and it seemed as though Harry had forgotten about Niall. The two of them were as close as they could be without actually touching each other, and Libby was dying to at least put her hands up on his shoulders. Just as she thought that, Harry’s massive hands covered her waist. She took it as her cue and she raised her arms and put her hands on his shoulders. He smiled and blushed so slightly she almost missed it. She smiled back, blushing and putting her head down for a second to hide it.
Nearly half an hour had passed and the two of them were getting tired of dancing.
“How about I buy you something to drink?” Harry offered. Libby shrugged and nodded her head. He grabbed her hand (which made her want to scream) and she followed him over to the bar. He ordered just water for the both of them, knowing that there was no way he could buy an alcoholic drink in America even if he tried. He handed her a glass and she clinked it with his.
“Cheers!” she said. Harry nodded and lifted his drink.
“Cheers!” he replied. He drank almost all of his water in one sip and she laughed.
“A bit thirsty, are we?” she asked. Harry smiled and shook his head.
“I can’t help it… Somebody made me dance,” he sassed.
“Yeah, well, you are in a boy band… I figured it was time you learned how to dance.” Harry laughed, and then the two of them were quiet for a few minutes. Libby suddenly realized that she’d ditched her friends and tried to look around for them.
“They left,” Harry said, catching her off guard.
“What? How do you know that?”
“While we were dancing, I saw the three girls you were with leave,” he answered calmly.
“Oh, what the fuck?!” Libby was pissed that her friends left without her, even though she was the one who had ditched them in the first place.
“Don’t worry about it,” Harry said.
“What do you mean ‘don’t worry about it?’ They were supposed to give me a ride home!”
“Then I guess you’re not going home tonight,” Harry said, smirking.
“This is not a time for terrible jokes, Harry,” she spat. She felt bad for being so rude, but she was pissed off.
“I wasn’t joking,” he said quietly. Libby raised an eyebrow, confused as to what he meant. “I’m only in town until mid-afternoon tomorrow... Spend the night with me?” He asked so quietly and so sweetly.
“I… Well, I told my mom I wouldn’t be out late, but I’m sure she’d understand.”
“That’s not sarcasm, is it?” Harry asked, frowning.
“Well, it is, but I don’t really care what she says anyway. I’ll shoot her a text and tell her I went home with one of the girls for a sleepover or something,” Libby replied. There was no way in hell she was going to let the opportunity to spend the night with Harry pass her by. She didn’t care what she had to do; she was going to spend the night with him. Harry smiled and stared at her for just a moment too long before catching himself and speaking again.
“Well, let’s start our evening by getting out of here, shall we?” he asked. Libby smiled and nodded. She drank the rest of her water and set the glass on the counter before spinning around on the bar stool and getting up to go with him.
Harry got to the door and looked at Libby, holding up a finger as if to say “give me one second.” He opened the front door of the club and peeked around, making sure there weren’t any fans who had somehow figured out where he was (they were always really good at that.) When he made sure the coast was clear, he waved a finger, signaling Libby to come towards him. They left the club together and began walking towards the hotel.
“So how was the show tonight?” Libby asked, trying to strike up a conversation.
“It was good. Weren’t you there?” he asked. “I mean… You’re a fan, aren’t you?” Libby smiled.
“Yeah, but unfortunately being a fan doesn’t exactly give me the money to buy tickets. Your shows are kind of expensive, you know.” Harry looked disappointed.
“Yeah… I know. I wish we had control over that. It’s just kind of set for us. Sometimes girls pay thousands on other websites to people who bought the tickets at original price… It’s a bit ridiculous, but it’s great to see how many fans come out and that they’re willing to do crazy things to support us. Not that I want them to do crazy things I just…”
“Easy, Harry,” Libby said. “Don’t hurt yourself; I know what you mean.” Harry let out a small sigh of relief. It was cute how flustered he was getting. Libby could tell he wasn’t really used to talking about his life other than in interviews or with the boys themselves.
“What do you like to do when you’re not performing?” she asked. It was kind of an interview question, but she’d hoped it would make him feel a little more comfortable, plus watching people talk about things they were passionate about always made them look even cuter.
“I like to go golfing with Niall when we have the chance,” he started. “A lot of times I’ll just go to clubs or uni parties and try to fit in with… I don’t know, normal people, I guess.”
“Well you obviously fit in just fine tonight,” Libby replied. Harry smiled and she could tell that it was a comforting thing for him to hear.
Suddenly Harry’s phone was ringing and he looked upset. “I gotta take this, I’m sorry,” he said. Libby nodded and they continued walking.
“Hello?... Yeah… No, I left a few minutes ago… In the hotel room?... Okay. Can I bring a friend?... Alright, see you soon. Bye.”
“Who was that?” Libby asked.
“It was Niall. He wanted to see if I could come back to the hotel room. They’re all having a late night movie night I guess. Would you like to come with?”
“You mean… To the movie night? With you and… and the rest of the boys?” she asked. Harry nodded.
“Well, yeah, if you’re alright with that,” Harry replied. It took everything Libby had to keep herself from squealing and jumping around like the fangirl she truly was.
“It sounds great, I’m in,” she said. Harry smiled and grabbed her hand, and the two of them walked the rest of the way to the hotel together. They were both surprised that no fans had been standing outside of the hotel yet, screaming when they got the slightest glimpse of any of the boys.
“Quiet night tonight,” Harry said. Libby shrugged. She couldn’t even imagine what it’d be like to have hundreds, if not thousands, of girls standing outside a hotel screaming for her.
“Libby, this is Liam, Louis, Niall, and Zayn,” Harry said. They all waved and she gave a shy wave back.
“Hi, I’m Libby,” she said. The four of them said hi back to her.
“So what movie are we watching?” Harry asked.
“We found one called Insidious. ‘Ave ya seen it before?” Niall asked. Libby shook her head.
“Nope, but I heard it was terrifying,” she replied. The boys all shrugged and Niall pushed play on the remote. They made room on the couch for Libby and Harry to sit; Liam and Zayn both moved to the floor and Niall moved to a chair with a footrest. Libby noticed the ice on his knee.
“Knee acting up again?” Libby asked. Niall looked confused before he realized that she was a fan.
“Yeah, really hurtin’ me t’day,” he replied in his thick Irish accent.
“Hope it feels better soon,” Libby said. “Maybe you should be a little more careful when you’re on stage… You’re a bit young to have serious knee problems already!” Niall shrugged.
“Yeeaaah I knowww… Just ‘ave too much fun jumpin’ around, I don’t wanna give it up.” He adjusted the ice pack on his knee before the previews for the movie ended and the movie finally began.
The movie finally began to get scary and, though Libby loved scary movies, she wanted to cuddle up to Harry. She did it slowly enough that Harry could easily move away at any point and she could say that it was an accident. First she shifted in her seat, scooting an inch closer to him so that their hips were touching. Then, she rested her head on his shoulder. He rested his head on top of hers and then she knew that it was okay for her to curl up to him completely. She positioned her body so that she was lying across the couch, using Harry as both her pillow and her teddy bear. She draped one arm across his torso and he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. Though the two of them had only met a few hours ago, it felt as though they’d been dating for years.
Eventually the movie ended and Libby couldn’t stop laughing at the boys screaming in terror. It was almost four in the morning, but everybody tried to avoid mentioning that the boys were leaving in less than 12 hours. They were all exhausted, but Libby and Harry both knew that the sooner they went to sleep, the faster the next day would come. They went and sat on the balcony, waiting for the sun to rise.
They talked about random little things, like their families and their hobbies, and got to know each other in just a short amount of time. Suddenly Harry looked extremely uncomfortable and Libby wasn’t sure what was wrong.
“Everything alright?” she asked. Harry nodded, but his face was still showing the same distressed emotion.
“Yeah, I just… I… Can I have your phone number? I’d like to keep talking to you even after I leave. I mean… If that’s okay with you?” Libby smiled and nodded her head.
“Of course that’s okay with me!” she said. She took his phone and entered her name and her number into it, putting a smiley face after her name. She handed it back to him. “Just send me a text and I’ll save your number.” He smiled and did as he was told. He smiled and shook his head when he noticed the smiley face.
“You’re so adorable,” Harry said. Immediately the two of them were both blushing.
“Well thanks,” she replied. “You’re quite the cutie pie yourself.” He looked up at her and smiled before turning to look at the sky.
“Sun should be up any minute now, yeah?”
“Yeah,” she replied. Harry moved his chair over closer to hers and grabbed her hand. He was such a romantic and it made Libby incredibly happy. Harry made her feel more loved than any other guy she’d ever known had, and she loved it.
The sun rose and the two of them sat there in silence, watching as the sky turned all sorts of beautiful colors. Once it was well into the sky, Harry broke the silence.
“You should probably be getting back, yeah?” he asked. Libby felt her stomach sink.
“Yeah… Will you come with me?” Harry nodded and opened the patio door to let her inside. They walked across the hotel room quietly, so as not to wake the rest of the boys who had finally gone to sleep. They left the room and were greeted by a security guard.
“Where are you off to, Styles?” he asked.
“I just want to make sure she gets home safely,” Harry explained. “Could we get a ride?”
“Sure thing, mate,” the guard replied.
The two of them got into the back of a black van and held hands the entire way to Libby’s house. When they got there, Harry walked her to her door and hugged her.
“I had a really great time with you tonight, Harry,” Libby said. “If you’re ever back in Wisconsin, I’d love to see you again.” Harry smiled. It was probably the first time a girl had treated him like a normal human being rather than a piece of meat in a long time.
“I had a lovely time as well,” Harry replied. “And don’t you worry, I’ll be sure to come back soon so that I can see you. We have a week off in a few weeks, I’ll make some travel arrangements. I’ll see you then?” Libby was shocked that Harry was that anxious to see her again.
“I… I’d love that. Yeah, I’ll see you then,” she replied. Suddenly Harry cupped her face with his hands and leaned down to kiss her. Sparks flew and Libby knew that she’d fallen head over heels in love with him in less than 12 hours and she didn’t even mind.
“I’ll see you soon, Libby. I promise,” Harry said. With that, he kissed her quickly one last time before walking down the front steps and back to the van. She noticed when he wiped a tear from his eye before he got into the backseat. She found herself wiping one from hers, too.
“See you soon, Harry Styles,” she said quietly.
